This week, we partnered with Millard Public Schools STEM Academy to connect with 8th–11th graders about careers in construction. It was a great opportunity to promote Millard West High School’s STEM programs and ignite a passion for building the future in young minds.

Currently, the representation of Hispanic workers in the STEM workforce stands at 15%, while Asian and Black workers make up 10% and 9% respectively. Meanwhile, American Indians and Alaska Natives account for less than 1% of both the U.S. population and the STEM workforce. Despite these numbers, the curriculum in STEM education has not yet adapted to adequately address the unique needs of students in terms of their cultural identity, language, and religion. One of the five National Science Foundation core values is diversity and inclusion. This is how MCCCD is doing that. To bridge this gap, based on my anecdotal experience and empirical data, I merged world history, cultural studies, and STEM together to develop a new course hopefully to be offered in FA2025 called: ETH: 210 Multicultural Representation in the History of STEM. This course will explore the historical context and societal factors that have affected the representation of diverse communities in STEM. By incorporating elements of cultural studies, students would gain a deeper understanding of the impact of culture on scientific and technological advancements. The class highlights the contributions of scientists and engineers from diverse backgrounds to provide students with role models to look up to and a broader perspective on the possibilities for their own futures in STEM. I will be presenting about this course at the AZCTE 2024 Summer Conference in Tucson. If you are nearby, stop by and check me out.

Last week was an exciting time for the Great Opportunities in Technology and Engineering Careers (GO TEC® Virginia) program! A ribbon-cutting was held for the grand opening of the new GO TEC Training Lab at the EO Regional Workforce and Child Development Hub in Abingdon, Va. GO TEC Career Connections Labs, which provide middle schoolers with memorable, hands-on introductions to STEM and manufacturing-focused careers, are now in 52 middle schools across Virginia. The GO TEC Training Lab will provide state-of-the-art resources and training for GO TEC teachers in Southwest Virginia. “We believe that by equipping teachers with the necessary skills to be trained to teach an innovative program like GO TEC, we can help them engage and inspire Virginia students in their future career choices," said Angela Rigney, GO TEC Director. “We are committed to providing high-quality workforce development training that will help middle school teachers inspire their students to explore the ever-evolving technology and engineering industries in our region," said Crystal Breeding, Director of Education + Emerging Workforce at EO. It was a pleasure to return to Springmoor Grange School to deliver our award-winning Get into STEM programme to 143 children. Esh’s commercial build division completed the new school last year on behalf of Durham County Council, with students moving in for the start of the 2024-25 academic year. Richard Carroll and Sarah Armstrong from Durham County Council also joined the sessions to gain a deeper insight into how the social value programme has a positive impact on young people and contributes to the County Durham Pound initiative. Get into STEM aims to inspire the younger generation to pursue a career in the construction industry. Hear more about the day 👇

#USSteel joined the Pittsburgh Steelers as a presenting partner to teach South Allegheny Middle School students about the possibilities of a career in STEM. Classroom visits like this are an aspect of the Steelers’ STEM program we have sponsored for several years. Another key part of the program: an online curriculum offered to middle schools across Western Pennsylvania at no cost to schools or students. This curriculum enables students to explore careers rooted in STEM and what it takes to achieve success in those careers. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eU_qXMfm

Calling all Educators! Albertus Magnus College is holding a virtual information session on July 10 for those interested in our Master's of Science in STEM Education Program. I cannot stress enough that STEM is more than the acronym. It is GOOD teaching-- a pedagogical tool that provides access, inclusion, and equity through experiential, trans-disciplinary learning. STEM can and should be integrated into all classrooms, and it is easier to do than some of us think! Our program is geared toward just that. In 11 months, you will earn 30 credits, learn practical ways to incorporate STEM across subject areas, learn grant-writing and leadership skills, and if you so choose, become prepared to pass the Praxis II in Technology Education for the 047 cross-endorsement. New Haven Public Schools is funding a portion of tuition for New Haven teachers. Teachers from any alliance district receive 15% off tuition. Register to learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eumZvW7N

In the spirit of our school's commitment to empowering students for success, I'd like to commend our Executive Director, Dr. Stauffer, for his article highlighting the importance of partnerships in preparing our high school students for the future. The article captures the collaborative efforts between various educational partners, including local businesses, educators, counselors, administrators, and industry representatives, to ensure that no student is left behind in their pursuit of valuable skills and opportunities. Dr. Stauffer emphasizes the important role of Career and Technology Centers in providing high-quality education that equips students with practical, hands-on learning experiences. By partnering with local businesses and industry, our centers bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application, preparing students for success in college, postsecondary training, the military, or the workforce. I particularly appreciate the emphasis on the alignment of curriculum with industry standards, the provision of industry-standard tools and equipment, and the opportunity for students to earn nationally recognized certifications. These initiatives not only enhance students' understanding of their chosen fields but also cultivate a skilled workforce that contributes to the prosperity of Berks County. The article highlights the importance of early engagement and informed decision-making for students, facilitated through career presentations, campus tours, and open house events. By fostering positive relationships and collaboration with local partners, our school ensures that students are well-prepared to meet the demands of tomorrow's workforce. Dr. Stauffer's article supports the commitment of our school and community to empowering the next generation of skilled workers and leaders. I encourage anyone interested in learning more about these opportunities to reach out to the Berks Career and Technology Center or the Reading/Muhlenberg Career and Technology Center. Together, we are shaping a bright future for our students and our community.
"When it comes to educating the next generation to lead Berks County well into the future, it is crucial to recognize the many partnerships that go into preparing today’s high school students to become the leaders of tomorrow." In this week’s Superintendents’ Forum, Dr. Michael Stauffer, Berks Career & Technology Center (BCTC) Executive Director, discusses the partnerships that boost education in the community.
