In this video, Dr. Yogita Prashar, Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Manipal Hospital Delhi, discusses recurrent pregnancy loss. Recurrent pregnancy loss is defined as the failure of pregnancy more than three times. While 50-75% of these losses occur without a known cause, they are often attributed to chromosomal abnormalities. Other potential causes include issues related to the uterus, such as fibroids or polyps in the uterine cavity. Dr. Prashar also addresses additional causes of pregnancy loss and discusses treatment options for managing this condition. Check out this fascinating case from our recent Obstetrics sonography at 15 weeks gestation. We discovered an omphalocele (exomphalos), a congenital anterior abdominal wall defect at the umbilical cord insertion, showing herniation of the fetal membrane-covered gut. Careful technique ruled out Gastroschisis. Sonography revealed a distinct membrane with associated Wharton's jelly. This anomaly occurs in about 1:4000 live births and is often associated with other congenital anomalies. This case highlights the invaluable role of ultrasonography in pregnancy! Performed by: Rad. This study from Jennifer Ko and colleagues at Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong investigates the relationship between vitamin D deficiencies and miscarriage in response to a recent systematic review and meta-analysis that showed that women with natural conception and vitamin D deficiency had a significantly increased risk of miscarriage, and a potential relationship between early pregnancy, vitamin D and progesterone, Their findings showed that vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency was not associated with an increased risk of miscarriage in women with threatened miscarriage presenting to the Early Pregnancy Assessment Clinic (EPAC) and further well-powered prospective vitamin D supplementation studies are needed to help to clarify the role of vitamin D supplementation in women with threatened miscarriage. Gynecology and obstetrics are specialized branches of medicine focused on women's reproductive health. Gynecology involves diagnosing and treating conditions related to the female reproductive organs, including issues with the ovaries, uterus, and vagina. Obstetrics, on the other hand, is concerned with the care of pregnant women, including prenatal care, childbirth, and postnatal care. While gynecologists handle a range of health concerns such as menstrual irregularities and hormonal issues, obstetricians focus on managing pregnancy and ensuring safe delivery. Together, these fields provide comprehensive care for women’s reproductive health throughout their lives.
