We have heard a lot about the 3G switch off’s, but what about 2G? Jeanie York, Chief Technology Officer at Virgin Media O2 has written a blog post on their website about what they plan to do with the technology, and it’s an interesting read. Given that the UK MNOs don’t need to switch off their 2G networks until 2033, it would make sense to use the spectrum in some shape or form – and that’s exactly what they are going to do – use it to support emergency service calls and support data traffic for smart energy meters. Both use cases in theory use less data than other services like watching streaming services so this would make sense given 2G’s limitations. This is very interesting stat as well – ‘less than 1% of customers use 2G-only devices, and the network carries less than 0.1% of data traffic.’ #connectivity #networks #investment #innovation #mnos #2g #3g #4g #5g #business #enterprise #smartmeters #UK #towers #masts #inbuilding #growth #mobile #mobilenetworks #telecoms #telecommunications #technology #SRN #Sharedruralnetwork https://lnkd.in/eYyJcNp8

When I think about it, mobile networks are one-size-fits-all services. While 5G technology is set to change that paradigm. With its capabilities for low latency, expanded coverage, increased security/trustworthiness and the innovative concept of network slicing, 5G is poised to transform mobile connectivity into a more tailored experience. Imagine a future where mobile networks are not just a static buffet but rather a dynamic bistro menu, offering exactly what different users and applications need. Achieving this vision requires more than just incremental upgrades. A complete 5G standalone network is essential to harness the full potential of differentiated services. This technology can manage network functions to meet diverse demands while ensuring fair access for all users. The potential for this shift is immense. From high-speed connectivity for live streaming to optimized network traffic management, 5G opens up new business opportunities for developers and CSPs alike.
