Auditory distance perception in virtual environments is a critical component of immersive technologies. Accurately simulating sound source spatialization remains a challenging and relatively underexplored area, yet it is essential for developing ecologically valid virtual environments and audio-only augmented reality systems. This paper presents my contributions to the ongoing work of Dr. Vergara and Dr. Lombera, who aim to unravel the mechanisms underlying auditory perception in both real and virtual conditions. First released in 2022, EASE 5 provides a growing feature set that allows predicting the performance of sound systems for immersive acoustics and spatial audio that aim to deliver a rich 3D experience as well as natural listener envelopment. Considering that the technology is still young and very complex at the same time, the planning and lay-out of immersive applications is notoriously difficult and typically requires significant expertise. Using EASE 5, one can now better predict the success of the design and the scope of the project, resulting in better estimates of total cost and system size. The innovative features of EASE 5 enable engineers to analyze and optimize loudspeaker coverage, loudspeaker density, spatial localization of sources, content perception direction, and more acoustic characteristics.
