Let’s talk about Cloud Sustainability. Cloud Sustainability refers to the practice of reducing the carbon footprint and costs of workloads running on public cloud platforms. As we advance our adoption of cloud-enabled technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML), blockchain, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and particularly quantum computing we can achieve significantly higher positive outcomes around sustainability and environmental issues in many ways. However, it's crucial to understand that these advancements don't inherently guarantee a sustainable IT infrastructure. In fact, the energy required to power some of these advancements almost certainly push toward a more negative outcome for our planet. Alarmingly for many of us in the industry, global GHG emissions from the tech sector rival those of the aviation industry. With ICT accounting for about 3% of total emissions vs 2% for aviation. Data centers alone contribute to around 1% of total emissions, consuming vast amounts of electricity. If unchecked, these emissions could skyrocket to 10% of global emissions in the next decade (source: Our World in Data). The challenge intensifies as most cloud providers offer only basic metrics for their customers' cloud usage, covering primarily scope 1 & 2 emissions. This makes it difficult for organisations to comprehensively assess and reduce their carbon footprint. For cloud consumers, hyperscaler emissions are categorized as scope-3, but providers themselves must deal with their own complex scope 1, 2, & 3 emissions. Notably, scope 3 emissions account for over 80% of a cloud provider's carbon footprint, encompassing emissions from infrastructure and the supply chain. Cloud Ctrl has been addressing this challenge for over a year now with our Energy and Emissions Dashboard for public cloud.
