Hub's annual "Video Redefined" study confirms that social video on platforms like YouTube and TikTok plays an outsize role in the lives of young viewers, at the expense of traditional premium TV. 📱 Consumers age 13-24 spend more time watching “non-premium” online video than they do regular TV shows. 🛋️ #YouTube content has won a seat in the living room. 🫣 Many viewers are uncomfortable with the amount of time they spend on short-form video. The results of a joint study between Hub and Advertising Research Foundation (ARF) fielded as part of our annual "Decoding the Default" survey found significant differences between liberals and conservatives in which entertainment TV shows they find appealing. What we found: 📺 The TV viewing audience is almost equally split between liberal and conservatives. 📺 Among all viewers, the list of most-liked shows was topped by "Friends," "Saturday Night Live," and "NCIS." 📺 Strong characters and relationships drove the likeability of shows that appeal to both liberals and conservatives. I saw another email today about pushing radio stations to embrace more video, with the idea that everything should be on screen. This particular station is clearly prepping to be as much a YouTube presence as a radio one. It got me thinking. Radio is a completely different beast to TV. For one, it’s far more personal. Radio presenting requires a unique skill set. Very few TV shows have a host who goes live for 3-4 hours, five days a week. It’s rare for a TV star to seamlessly jump into radio—most don’t make the leap. And let’s not forget, radio presenters are often paid less than their TV counterparts. You’ll find countless examples of radio hosts pulling in millions of listeners but earning far less than TV presenters with smaller audiences. So here’s the question: As radio stations ramp up their “visualisation” efforts, when will they start paying their experienced, award-winning presenters the kind of rates that rival flagship TV shows? At some point, this conversation will need to happen—and I’m betting they’re not ready for it. I'm intrigued to hear your thoughts... #radio #tv #YouTube #presenters

Time for the Spotifycation of TV? Absolutely. It is overdue and will be another disruption in TV: the idea of a single platform where you can binge across all services, no endless app-hopping. A place where you can build your own playlists or dive into curated lists for every mood, theme, and trend. Think genre playlists, franchise collections, “watch later” stacks, and even influencer-created lists. Add in season “albums,” mood-based recommendations, and yes, watch parties—suddenly, TV becomes more than passive viewing; it’s an interactive, personalized experience. The TV industry needs to stop playing it safe and embrace this disruptor model. The future of TV could be as simple, social, and seamless as listening to your favorite playlist. What is holding us back? The old walled garden mentality and keeping all your flywheel elements close to your chest. But rest assured: if we do not do voluntarily, soon a big player will force us into the model.
