Following the devastating impact of back-to-back hurricanes in 2017, which destroyed nearly 80% of Puerto Rico's power grid, the territory passed Act 17 in 2019, committing to achieving 100% renewable energy by 2050. A new analysis from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has now validated that this ambitious goal is indeed attainable. The Puerto Rico Grid Resilience and Transitions to 100% Renewable Energy Study (PR100) explored various scenarios that would enable Puerto Rico to meet its 100% renewable energy target, while also prioritising factors such as energy access, affordability, reliability, resilience, and economic development. Three key scenarios were identified as viable pathways forward, focusing on economic, equitable, and maximum deployment of rooftop solar and storage. The study concluded that significant system upgrades and investments will be required, guided by community participation. 👏 Commendable Step by Gold Standard 👉 Gold Standard has clarified that renewable energy project that involves Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) would not be limited by eligibility via geography or scale (like other RE projects). Such projects definitely require carbon revenue to make them more investable and adoptable.
