Reinforcement Lapping Zones in Beams In beams, overlapping of the bottom bars is not permitted at the mid-span due to the maximum tension experienced in the beam's bottom fiber. Conversely, the top bars can be overlapped at the mid-span where tension is minimized. When dividing the span into three equal parts, the overlapping of top bars should occur in the intermediate zones, with each bar offset at alternating levels within those areas. For the bottom bars, overlaps should take place at column junctions, extending up to L/4 from each end, and each bar should also be offset at alternative levels within the overlapping zones. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙪𝙣𝙗𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙫𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙍𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘽𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙜𝙚: 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜, 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠 𝙤𝙛 𝙖𝙧𝙩 𝙤𝙧 𝙗𝙤𝙩𝙝? The Heatherwick studio’s Rolling Bridge spans an inlet of the Grand Union Canal at Paddington Basin, west London. It appears to be a normal #steel and #timber footbridge when open – until it needs to get out of the way. Then, rather than breaking and lifting up as a rigid element, the Rolling Bridge curls until its two ends meet. Through an amazing symphony of moving steel the bridge is transformed into an octagon that stands on one side of the canal, without a trace of a #bridge on the other bank.
