Power rating in passive components defines the maximum power level a component can manage without sustaining damage. Expressed in watts (W), it signifies the amount of energy that can be dissipated as heat while maintaining optimal performance. Surpassing this power rating may result in overheating, malfunction, or a shortened lifespan of the component. FEV software detects and prevents partial discharge early on FEV Group has developed PD-HVX (Partial Discharge – High Voltage X) for the early detection and prevention of PD in high-voltage electric-drive units (EDUs). PD can cause damage to the insulation in modern EDUs, and in the worst-case scenario this can result in total failure of the vehicle. PD-HVX uses electromagnetic frequency analysis to measure the electromagnetic fields around a drive unit. The software then uses the results to determine whether PD is occurring within the EDU during operation, which enables customers to take action. PD is a local, electrical sparkover that can occur at high voltages above 600 V. It is caused by extremely small defects or inhomogeneities in insulation material or soiled surfaces. If it remains unnoticed within an EDU and occurs repeatedly, it can lead to gradual damage of the insulation and to premature stoppage of the vehicle. “PD has been known for a long time in the field of electrical systems engineering and high-voltage transmission networks, where corresponding tests are common practice,” said Dr Dr.-Ing. Michael Stapelbroek, vice-president, electric powertrain, at FEV. “In the automotive sector, the phenomenon is just gaining focus with the increasing spread of 800 V batteries. By detecting partial discharge in the EDU at an early stage, possible reasons for insulation damage in the electronics can be eliminated during the development process. 🔵 PEC: #40 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 | 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 Founded in 1984 in Leuven, Belgium, we began our journey with an automotive project for Alfred Teves Gmbh (ATE - now Continental). In 1984, ATE had just started the development of ABS braking systems for Ford. Unlike their competitor Bosch, ATE planned to make this game-changing technology available as standard for a mid-size car model and the broader public. The ATE factory in Mechelen, Belgium was set to produce the ABS sensors and valves for this very advanced product at the time. PEC was chosen to develop and build the test equipment for the ABS sensor part. However, this test equipment was very complicated, and the budget was limited. 1984 was a time when process computers were still very expensive, and PLCs hardly existed. Being creative, we decided to use one of the very first Commodore PET personal computers and could get our hands on an additional I/O board that was developed by SCK Mol for the Nuclear industry. All design work was still very manual, the mechanics were made in small workshops, and everything was assembled in Luc's garage, where I developed the controls and software – all in low-level assembly language, there simply was nothing else. Both the Ford Scorpio and the ABS system became massive successes, where PEC did a great job and secured the order for a full-scale automated multimillion (BEF) test line. New employees joined the company and the development of several new innovations, such as a very accurate optical positioning system and a cable shielding tester, were realized. PEC was on its way...
