Oxford Nanopore Technologies and Twist Bioscience have partnered for a pharmacogenomics beta program. The program combines Twist's NGS reagents and enrichment panels with Oxford Nanopore’s sequencing platforms. The goal is to develop long-read PGx workflows for personalized medicine. These workflows provide genetic results in a single end-to-end process, eliminating the need for follow-up testing. The beta program has already resolved the CYP2D6 gene in one assay. Twist’s hybrid capture panels will also be compatible with Oxford Nanopore's platforms. Twist CEO Emily Leproust highlighted the collaboration's potential for personalized therapies. It was a pleasure discussing the overlap between drug discovery and cell therapy at the BioPharma Nexus Conference. In both cases, our goal is to manipulate the function of cells for therapeutic benefit, and many of the same AI/ML strategies that have proven success in one apply to the other. One approach I presented is sequential screening. Here, we test potential drug candidates in small, carefully chosen batches to minimize costs while still rapidly identifying promising targets. Models pre-trained on public perturbation data can be used to determine the most informative set of drugs to test at any given moment, thereby minimizing the number of total batches required. In this strategy, the AI assumes the role of scientific director, deciding which hypotheses to test and how to best allocate limited resources.
