Solid State Batteries. Why is everyone so excited with them? Long story short. Higher energy density and way less weight. These batteries have been just around the corner for over a decade. They are projected to be a major game changer in the battery world. We may start seeing them in vehicles for sale in 2027. These batteries will allow us to electrify larger vehicles like semi-trucks. For those who want to know, the difference between solid state and lithium ion is that in solid states, the anode is made out of pure lithium instead of graphite, meaning much more of the battery is made out of lithium than lithium-ion. Furthermore, and why it gets its name, the electrolyte that separates the anode and the cathode is solid instead of liquid. Given that solid states are more lithium than lithium ion batteries, they will be easier to recycle as well. The lack of graphite as a requirement will also reduce the US's reliance on China, who controls around 80% of the worlds graphite production. Solid state is exciting new technology that we may begin to see more of in the coming years. Check out this Volts podcast for more info! #batteries #solidstate #volts https://lnkd.in/gcbdd9Za
The potential for higher energy density and reduced weight could indeed revolutionize the battery industry, particularly for larger vehicles like semi-trucks. Looking forward to seeing how this game-changing technology unfolds!
