Dear Partners, Every day, we learn new things – from studying and reading to meeting and discussing with other people. An old piece of advice goes ‘Remember why we have two ears and one mouth’: it’s important to listen.    We’ve recently learnt an interesting lesson from an encounter with a new customer, also a family-owned company, much bigger than Vahterus. They’ve designed their own high-value investing scheme, which is used in large global operations in the process industry. Their customer relationships are built on trust and commitment. The delivery terms require that full payment is made upfront, before the delivery. This entails high trust and commitment from the customers.   Another interesting angle was to hear how they work when recruiting new mechanical engineers for design. They have a principle that every new engineer is required to do all calculations manually for the first half year, instead of using software that generates a ready result without the engineer fully grasping the theoretical background. During this period, the aim is to gain a deep understanding of both the calculation and the product. Similar to the customer relationships, this too requires commitment from the new employee.   These examples can both serve as models as we build our strategies and journeys for ourselves and our businesses. There’s no such thing as ‘one model fits all’ – what works for one does not suit others. But seeing new approaches, new ways of working, opens our eys and expands our perspective. These all serve as reminders of how important it is to make sure we surround ourselves with a great diversity of people and experiences, keep an open mind, and never stop learning.   Together we succeed!
