Can a city in #america run out of #water ? The short answer is yes. But there’s a longer answer, too. A #city, a #community , a #neighborhood can have their supply cutoff or reduced or redirected. If you’ve been paying attention you know that a new deal was signed reducing quantities from the #ColoradoRiver to every recipient. Some smaller communities are finding that as river flows reduce, intake pipes can’t reach the water source. #Coastal communities have found that sea level rise has pushed #saltwater further inland, making #drinkingwater sources salty—undrinkable. What’s a state, a legislature, a utility to do? Plan. Yes, everyone does that. Invest. There’s a lot of funding for water and wastewater #infrastructure available now. Redundancy. Different, reliable sources of sufficient #quantity must be secured and, where possible, #interconnects among utilities can help through emergencies. There’s more. The proposed changes (which still need City Council approval) will shift watering hours; add a surcharge for those customers with extremely high water use in Stage 3; and will forgo city-issued water citations for a violation fee that will be added to a customer’s bill - including those customers who live outside city limits. If approved, the new rules could go into effect mid-July. #txwater #utilities #conservation

Among the proposed changes include morning & evening watering times and a surcharge for the most excessive water users — those using more than 20,000 gallons a month. The surcharge would only affect only the top 5% of accounts. #utilities #txwater #conservation

It’s better to deal with an issue before it spirals into a bigger problem. Proactivity should always be utilized when the chance is afforded, especially when it comes to a resource as vital as water. Locations prone to dry spurts and infrequent rain have to take a greater initiative with water preservation/conservation. Something as simple as not using lawn sprinklers during rain or right after rain can go a long way. #WaterConservation #WaterPreservation #NaturalResource

Rainwater Harvesting Systems in the I-Codes Introduction The provisions of the CSA B805/ICC 805-2018 Standard for Rainwater Harvesting Systems, serve as an alternative to Chapter 13 of the 2021 International Plumbing Code® (IPC®) for regulating the materials, design, construction, and installation of systems for rainwater collection, storage, treatment, and distribution of non-potable water. The use and application of nonpotable water is mandated to comply with the laws, rules, and ordinances applicable in the jurisdiction. The Standard first appeared in the 2018 International Residential Code® (IRC®). Although Chapter 13 of the IPC® and Chapter 29 of the IRC® both offer good overall coverage for using rainwater as a nonpotable water source, CSA B805/ICC 805-2018 offers a more comprehensive approach for these systems. The Standard was developed to make it easier for jurisdictions to accept and approve rainwater harvesting systems on a larger scale than had previously been possible. A framework is provided for both designers and code officials to implement systems, with confidence that meet the intent of the building, plumbing, fire, and health codes.
