For the first day of #MuseumWeek, we are highlighting what happens #BehindTheScenesMW at the museum! One key aspect of behind-the-scenes curatorial research at SAMA is provenance research, which focuses on the history of an artwork’s acquisition by various collectors, auction houses, and museums. Provenance research can reveal the previously unknown context of artworks. “The Suspension Bridge” was first purchased by Dr. Paul Gachet, who is famous for providing care to and encouraging the work of Vincent van Gogh at the end of his life. Dr. Gachet developed close relationships with many impressionist artists at this same time, including Pissarro, Cézanne, and Guillamin, from whom he purchased the painting. After Dr. Gachet’s death, his children auctioned the painting to Wildenstein & Co., Inc., where it was purchased by Gilbert Denman, longtime friend of the museum, in 1959. Finally, in 2005, the work was given to SAMA in Denman’s will. Does added context to a painting’s history make you experience it differently? Armand Guillamin, French, 1841-1927, “The Suspension Bridge,” ca. 1873, Oil on canvas, 12 1/2 x 18 1/4 in., San Antonio Museum of Art, Bequest of Gilbert M. Denman, Jr., 2005.1.174.

Explore Ben Sanderson's exhibition, OUROBOROS, where art transforms into a spatial experience. The gallery becomes a tapestry of temporary rooms crafted from repurposed paintings. Each piece holds intentional 'fronts' and serendipitous 'backs,' playing distinct roles in this artistic narrative. Sanderson invests meticulous energy into the 'fronts,' featuring top-stitched, colour-block patterns housing smaller paintings. A deliberate process unfolds as selected artworks find their place within collaged walls, creating a visual symphony of thoughts. Conversely, the 'backs' reveal a fully improvised artistic journey, surprising even the creator. They embody the repository of subconscious thoughts, akin to crawling through a hedge of creativity. Unplanned and spontaneous, the backs hold fragments that resist categorization. It's a dance of confusion and clarity, where fronts emerge from old backs, and backs are born from old fronts. Ben Sanderson’s OUROBOROS exhibition invites you to explore this intricate interplay between intention and spontaneity, where every piece tells a unique story. Dive into the realm of transformed art, where the frontiers of creativity are blurred, and the unexpected takes centre stage. 😱 The Scream at The Munch Museum 😱 Did you know there are several different versions of Edvard Munch’s “The Scream”? The two painted versions are on display at @munchmuseet.no and in the National Museum of Norway. The Scream (1910?), exhibited at MUNCH, has been the centre of extensive debate over the years as to when it was actually painted. Different arguments suggest that it was painted in 1906, 1910 or between 1915-18. In an attempt to solve this mystery once and for all, MUNCH collaborated with researchers from the University of Antwerp and HIROX Europe. The researchers performed detailed investigations of pigments and paint layers of the painting using high-tech equipment (against other artworks with confirmed dating) in an attempt to more accurately date this work. 🔬 Considering the large amount of collected data, solving this mystery will take several months, but we’ll let you know when they find out. In the meantime, The Scream (1910?) is back on display at the @munchmuseet.no 😱 🖼️

As significant anniversaries of artists approach, museums often take the opportunity to reassess their oeuvres. Recently, a painting long attributed to Caspar David Friedrich and listed in the 1976 catalogue raisonné was stripped of its attribution. Doubts expressed on stylistic grounds were confirmed when scientific analysis revealed inconsistencies with his techniques and materials. This reassessment, prompted by Friedrich's upcoming 250th birthday, highlights the importance of understanding attribution risk: even works listed in catalogue raisonnés are not immune to re-evaluation. It also underscores the value of analysing verified works to build a robust contextual library of data points. https://lnkd.in/egvpMijH
