I am excited to announce the recent publication of, “The Role of the Neural Exposome as a Novel Strategy to Identify and Mitigate Health Inequities in Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias” in the journal Molecular Neurobiology. This was a collaborative effort, and it was a pleasure to work alongside Ravid Granov, Skyler Vedad, Shu-Han (Suzy) W., Divyash Shah, and Giulio Maria Pasinetti, MD, PhD. Our work covers how the Neural Exposome can be utilized as a mechanistic approach to understand the development of ADRD, especially in disadvantaged communities, and considers exposomic factors and exposures that are oftentimes overlooked that may contribute to the development of ADRD. My grandmother’s battle with Alzheimer’s instilled a deep passion in me at a young age to want to pursue a career in neurodegenerative disease research and make meaningful, ethical contributions to the research community. It is that same passion that I carry to this day, and it is my hope that this paper has that effect.

Exciting Findings on Ras-MAPK Pathway and White Matter Tracts! I am happy to share our latest publication in Brain Communications: "Impact of pathogenic variants of the Ras-Mitogen-activated protein kinase (Ras-MAPK) pathway on major white matter tracts in the human brain." Our study reveals critical insights into how Noonan syndrome (NS) and Neurofibromatosis type-1 (NF1), both linked to the Ras-MAPK pathway, affect white matter integrity in the developing brain. We observed that both NS and NF1 show similar yet distinct impacts on white matter, with NS having a more extensive effect. These findings highlight potential brain-focused outcome measures for treatments targeting this pathway. Discovery of 95 PTSD loci provides new insights into genetic susceptibility and neurobiology of trauma and stress-related disorders. Neuron Migration: The Remarkable Journey of Cortical Neurons 🧠🚀 Did you know that most cortical neurons are generated and migrate to their final destination during embryonic development? This complex process, known as neuron migration, is crucial for the formation of the cerebral cortex and brain function. Radially migrating neurons embark on an incredible voyage, starting from the germinal zones and navigating through densely populated territories to reach the cortical plate. This remarkable journey is guided by specialized cells called radial glia, which provide a scaffold for the migrating neurons. Disruptions in neuron migration have been linked to a variety of neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism, microcephaly, and schizophrenia. The power of Drosophila to study human disease genes!    Published in Biology Psychiatry, our latest research explores the impact of CYFIP1 gene variants on neurodevelopmental disorders. Within a family affected by intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder, we identified biallelic missense mutations in CYFIP1. We investigated the impact of these variants on cellular models and Drosophila mutants. Our findings reveal disruptions in the wave regulatory complex, impacting critical processes such as actin polymerization and brain morphology. Notably, the fly model replicates core symptoms observed in individuals with these mutations, including social and motor coordination deficits.   These discoveries deepen our understanding of CYFIP1 pivotal role in brain development and its correlation with clinical phenotypes in neurodevelopmental disorders. 🧠 #Neuroscience #Genetics #AutismResearch   Curious to learn more? Brain cell-type shifts in Alzheimer’s disease, autism, and schizophrenia interrogated using methylomics and genetics Few neuropsychiatric disorders have reliably reproducible biomarkers, motivating large-scale studies. Yet, a fundamental question remains unanswered: whether quantitative alterations in cell types contribute to these disorders.  Researchers analyzed human single-cell methylomics of individuals with Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, and autism. By deconvolving seven major cell types, they identified and replicated cell-type compositional shifts associated with Alzheimer's disease (endothelial cell loss), autism (increased microglia), and schizophrenia (decreased oligodendrocytes).
