My master thesis was about conducting an impact test with a 7.5kg drop weight to evaluate the strength of 3D printed parts made with FDM 3D Printer and Continuous Glass Fiber. The results showed that incorporating glass fiber into the 3D printed part increased its strength significantly. To manufacture these parts, I used dual extruder 3D printers: one nozzle for PLA honeycomb core and one nozzle for composite laminates. After doing this impact test, it is clear that using glass fibers in 3D printing results in much stronger and more resilient parts compared to pure PLA parts. This can open up new opportunities in manufacturing stronger and durable components with FDM 3d Printers! Surprisingly, there was a big difference in strength when compared to a combined PLA-Glass Fiber specimen bonded together with super glue.
