June is the month in which Tom Skinner was born 82 years ago and passed away 30 years ago. At a time of declining civility, rising racial terror, political upheaval, and threats to democracy, there is much that people of faith and diverse races today can learn from Tom Skinner’s teaching and practice of racial healing and commitment to biblical social justice. This 2021 article very well summarized what higher ed chaplains do, what our work is like. We support "the art of living" in a context that can otherwise be very competitive. Check it out if you want to learn more about everything I do as a higher ed chaplain. Our work is hard to quantify, but deeply important. https://lnkd.in/eq78iYQ4

I'm going to cherish this photo forever of some of my ride or die access to justice warriors, smiling huge after an intense day and a half! Margaret Hagan David Colarusso Dan Jackson Natalie Anne K. and Stacy Jane. Eduardo Gonzalez you outdid yourself 👊🏼 The Making Justice Accessible Summit at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences was a juggernaut. The brain power, heart and grit in the room were awe-inspiring and our convening was incredibly relevant at an institution founded in 1780 with members from George Washington, MLK, Nelson Mandela, and Sonny Rollins to Niels Bohr, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Einstein. Now, let's go 🚀

History lesson that will give you CHILLS: In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson was incapacitated by a stroke... and so his wife Edith took control. Historians report that Edith made decisions on his behalf and controlled access to her husband. Without anyone realizing, many argue she had effectively turned herself into de facto president. For years, it was covered up. Does this sound familiar? Note: The photo on the left is historic... the photo on the right has been photoshopped for editorial and comparison purposes. Here are some of the details of the history lesson you might not have known - and they come from a very liberal source - PBS: https://lnkd.in/e57nzxab #thinblueline #Lawenforcement

YES! YES! YES! President Niemi. LOVE MY NEW JOB! "...Not only are our students deeply interested in understanding the conflicts and complexities of the world, they also demonstrate the desire to act—to engage in discussion with us, to find out what they can do to help make change. To be that change. And we—faculty and staff alike—are uniquely equipped to help our students, and by extension our community, learn about these things, for what is public higher education if not a place where we can demonstrate how respectful civil discourse happens? A place where hard things can be debated, where people can disagree and still learn? A place where democracy is practiced without fear? Higher education is the space where we are supposed to make powerful, thoughtful, respectful noise. Our students deserve to hear it and to be part of it." Nancy Niemi
