Practicing Your Praxis - Monthly Meeting Join us for our monthly "Practicing Your Praxis" meeting with Joquina Reed of Divesting From Whiteness and myself, Desireé B Stephens of Make Shi(f)t Happen. This collaborative space is dedicated to moving from theory to action in our anti-racism and anti-oppression work, supporting various marginalized groups. Event Details: 📅 Date: The 19th of every month ⏰ Time: 11 am EST 📍 Location: Zoom Description: In this recurring meeting, we focus on embodying the principles of praxis—transforming our understanding of social justice into tangible actions that support and uplift marginalized communities. Each session is designed to provide actionable steps, foster meaningful discussions, and build a community of committed allies. What to Expect: Educational Insights: Kina Reed will share insights from her work with Divesting From Whiteness, offering tools and strategies to dismantle internalized whiteness, systemic racism, and other forms of oppression. Practical Applications: Desireé B Stephens will guide us through practical applications of whole self-healing and sustainable advocacy, drawing from her Make Shi(f)t Happen initiatives. Interactive Discussions: Engage in open dialogues and reflective exercises to deepen your understanding and commitment to anti-racism and anti-oppression. Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, marking a crucial step forward in the long and ongoing struggle for equality and justice. As healthcare professionals, we recognize the deep-rooted health disparities that continue to impact communities of color. Our mission to provide equitable, high-quality care for all is closely tied to the broader fight for social justice and racial equality. Today, we reaffirm our commitment to addressing systemic inequities in healthcare access and outcomes. We will continue to educate ourselves and others about the social determinants of health, advocate for policies that promote health equity, and work to build a more diverse and inclusive healthcare workforce. Anti-Black racism is a specific form of racism that targets people of African descent. It has its roots in European colonialism, the slave trade, and state-sanctioned segregation. It is recognized as harmful to the psychosocial, educational, and health outcomes of Black Canadians. However, there is limited research on the effects of anti-Black racism in early childhood. Building Bridges: Black History and Equity in Community Healthcare Community health centers (#CHCs) are essential in providing accessible and affordable healthcare services to underserved populations. In Massachusetts, CHCs proactively promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) within their organizations with creative initiatives that support inclusion. The Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers (MLCHC) is a valuable resource, offering guidance and support to community health centers in their #DEIB efforts. We understand the historical and present-day challenges associated with equity as it relates to institutional racism, and with respect to Black History Month, we encourage all healthcare leaders to ensure that black voices and perspectives are represented and included beyond the acknowledgment of this month, minimizing barriers that will hinder inequitable practices and a healthy workplace. As an organization, we honor Black individuals' accomplishments and resilience as we recognize their impact on society. Examining the policy operations for the Black community in the UK is imperative for fostering equity and dismantling systemic barriers. Understanding the Rationale: Scrutinizing policy operations is essential due to historical and contemporary disparities in the UK. Despite the country's commitment to equality and justice, data reveals persistent economic, educational, criminal justice, and health inequalities. Economic Disparities: Despite progress, economic disparities persist. The UK's Office for National Statistics indicates a significant wage gap between Black and white employees. Examining economic policies is crucial to address this disparity and promote mobility. Educational Inequities: Challenges in educational outcomes, including lower university enrollment and higher exclusion rates, persist in the Black community. Scrutinizing education policies allows for targeted interventions to ensure equal access to quality education. Criminal Justice System Disparities: The Black community faces disproportionate representation in the criminal justice system. A Lammy Review revealed overrepresentation at every stage. Examining policies within the criminal justice system is critical to address biases and ensure fair treatment. Health Inequalities: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted health disparities for Black individuals. Investigating health policies is necessary to understand and rectify root causes, ensuring equal access to healthcare and addressing social determinants of health. The Role of Policy Scrutiny: Identifying Systemic Biases: Examining policy operations identifies systemic biases perpetuating inequality. Understanding how policies operate unveils areas for reform and ensures equitable institutional practices. Tailoring Solutions: A nuanced examination of policy operations enables tailoring solutions to address specific challenges faced by the Black community, dismantling barriers and promoting equal opportunities.
