For many years, I worked as a medical sales representative, providing healthcare products and solutions to hospitals and pharmacies across Nigeria. It was a fulfilling job that allowed me to contribute to improving patient outcomes. However, I always felt a strong inclination towards the research and development side of the industry, especially in the field of cancer diagnostics. During this time, I attended several important industry events, including going for another degree in pharmacy. This exposure kept fueling my interest in cancer research and development. However, after several successful years as a medical/ medical sales representative, promoting different brands, I was promoted to the role of Area Sales Manager for a major healthcare company operating Worldwide. This role allowed me to oversee a larger territory and team, gaining valuable experience in managing a complex business operation. I thrived on the challenge of driving sales growth while also ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction. Ultimately, my passion for research and diagnostics led me to make a career change. I enrolled at Teesside University in Middlesbrough, UK, to pursue a degree in cancer and molecular diagnostics. This decision was not an easy one, as it meant leaving a stable and successful career in sales. However, I was driven by a strong desire to contribute directly to the fight against cancer. During my studies, I had the opportunity to attend several seminars and symposiums that deepened my understanding of the latest developments in the field. One particularly impactful event was the North West Cancer Research Symposium, in Liverpool which I was able to engage more deeply with the research presentations and network with leading experts in the field. Notwithstanding, the transition from sales to academia was not without its challenges. Balancing the demands of coursework after a long absence from studies, research, and family commitments required a significant amount of discipline and determination. However, I was driven by the belief that this path would one day allow me to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by cancer thereby contributing to global healthcare innovation. If you ever consider a career change, I encourage you to embrace the challenge and follow your passions. The road may not be easy, but the rewards of pursuing your dreams can be truly transformative. Adaptability, learning and determination are vital as we navigate our careers and make meaningful contributions to healthcare.
