What do I love most about wetlands? I love wetlands because they are the be-all and end-all ecosystem. They are the intersection of forests and prairie, riverine and oceanic landscapes. Wetlands are stopping points along the way of a greater, worldly landscape. They not only connect landforms, but life. Wetlands purify and recharge fresh water - a unfortunate tragedy of the commons; they are home to an innumerable amount of species (Did you know 60% of all species on this planet *directly* interact with wetlands?); and they are our sense of place, a food source, and our collective history (Mni Wiconi). Wetlands do all of these things and more without asking for anything in return. I am proud to have some small part in protecting these diverse, complex, ever-changing, life-saving, and life-giving ecosystems.

According to the 2022 Virginia Outdoors Survey, 85.7% of respondents believe that it is important to protect Virginia's natural and open space lands from development. Protecting these areas ensures the preservation of Virginia’s natural heritage for future generations, maintaining the state's scenic beauty and cultural identity. It is clear that Virginians value their natural landscapes supporting conservation and preservation across the Commonwealth. Many of the wilderness areas that we treasure were historically shaped by fire. Yet today, many wilderness landscapes are caught in the wildfire paradox – widespread suppression and exclusion of burning over the last century have increased the likelihood of high-intensity fires, which are more damaging rather than restorative. In December of 2022, experts from land management agencies, Tribes, and organizations across the country convened at the Wilderness and Fire Workshop in Gunnison to consider solutions to this dilemma, including the use of prescribed fire. Dr. Jonathan Coop, Western Colorado University Professor of Environment and Sustainability, has spent two decades studying the effects of fire on the landscape and is a principal investigator for this project. Do marine protected areas (MPAs) work? 🤔 Two NC State statisticians, Shu Yang and Brian Reich, worked on a project aimed at finding out if MPA’s effectively conserve our ocean’s resources and protect species and habitats.
