Meet Dr. Nancy Foster Scholar, Grace Casselberry. Grace protects the ocean's top predators while studying the interactions between great hammerhead sharks and Atlantic tarpon in Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. The information she collects will indicate where hammerheads take advantage of tarpon fishing in the national marine sanctuary, and help resource managers and fishing guides reduce this interaction. Learn more about this important research in her Story from the Blue. #RecreationalFishing #Conservation #FloridaKeys

🤔 Did you know destructive bottom-trawl fishing is allowed in our marine protected areas? It's awful, and it's got to stop. ❌ What gives us hope, is how well our ocean havens can recover if given the chance. We recently sat down with community dive group, Sussex Underwater, to discuss just that. They're highlighting the astonishing recovery that can happen when trawlers are banned, and marine life has a chance to thrive once more 🐟🐙🦑 Read the full interview here: https://lnkd.in/e3S_ufuV

Did you know that we protect the corals and sponges of Quebec's Gulf of St. Lawrence? In 2017, we established 11 marine refuges in the Laurentian Channel and around Anticosti Island to protect these cold-water corals and sponges. They provide resting, feeding and breeding grounds for many species of fish and other marine creatures. Their presence in the deep, cold waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence is like an oasis for many species! Because they are not very mobile and grow slowly, they are particularly vulnerable to any human activity affecting the seabed. This is why all bottom-contact fishing gear has been prohibited in these marine refuges. These closed fishing areas represent a major contribution by the fishing industry to the protection of marine ecosystems in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. In this video, discover the scale and diversity of our collective efforts to protect them: https://ow.ly/rSYj50QQ7Er

Good news! A previously unidentified North Atlantic right whale calf was spotted off the coast of Virginia this weekend. The calf’s mother is named Pico (catalog # 3270): She is at least 22 years old and this is her third calf. These critically endangered whales face serious threats from entanglement in fishing gear and strikes by vessels: Mother-and-calf pairs are particularly at risk, as they spend more time close to the surface and can be difficult to spot. https://lnkd.in/e6ptgPcd Two actions you can take to help protect North Atlantic right whales: ➡️ Urge NOAA to finalize a proposed vessel speed rule in North Atlantic right whale habitat: https://lnkd.in/eWNPVpbi ➡️ Ask your seafood retailer to support suppliers who use ropeless fishing gear. Shark nets and drum lines? Are they trawler and dynamite fishing too? How archaic and ill-conceived is this? And in a country promoted for its efforts towards the protection of the local ecology. If the sharks are deemed a hazard to swimmers, can they not create shallow bays for swimming and net in the shallows where the whales won’t follow… surely, there are other solutions that do not cause such wanton collateral death.

In 2023, shark nets and drum lines in Queensland killed 722 marine animals, including 9 dolphins killed and 11 humpback whales caught. This footage is of a distressed whale, entangled in shark nets in Marcoola, Queensland this week. Locals seeking to rescue wildlife caught in shark nets or drum lines face a $26,110 fine by the Queensland government. Queensland's Shark Control Program comprises 27 nets and 383 traditional lethal drumlines installed off the state's beaches, all of which are deployed year-round, including during whale migration season. Baited drumlines are even installed in the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef. This is an outdated, ineffective and inhumane approach to beach safety. After over 60 years of this program there remains little evidence that shark nets and drumlines do anything to improve beachgoer safety. The Queensland government is trialling alternatives to shark nets and drum lines, but not fast enough. If you’d like to take action, you can contact Queensland Premier, Steven Miles, asking him to transition the current Queensland shark control program to non-lethal, scientifically backed alternatives.
