Companies look for these transferable skills! We often think of molecular biology techniques, cell based assays, cloning as skills. Agree. But what does an industry expect from a candidate? 10 most critical skills are 1️⃣ Analytical skills: Your ability to analyse, interpret results and make decisions based on data. 2️⃣ Laboratory skills: Your proficiency in handling experiments, troubleshooting and interpretation. 3️⃣ Research skills: Your ability to conduct literature search, curate data and scientific writing. 4️⃣ Problem solving: Identifying the pain points and finding innovative solutions. 5️⃣ Communication skills: Effectively communicating scientific knowledge to a non-scientific group. 6️⃣ Collaboration: Your ability to work in a cross functional team with diverse domains. 7️⃣ Data analytical skills: Your familiarity with statistical packages like SAS, R programming etc. 8️⃣ Regulatory know-how: Your ability to understand the global regulatory framework and compliance requirements in biotechnology. 9️⃣ Aptitude: The way you behave, your attitude is critical that is often analyzed during personal interviews. So, you have a PhD biomedical sciences. You've worked very hard and you're definitely specialized...but that doesn't make you special. Why am I saying this? There's a lot of noise on this platform, especially when it comes to jobs for scientists with PhDs. The noise is either self-aggrandized cheerleading, or "exposing" manufactured problems that don't need solving. Both cases are an exploitation of your insecurities and unrealized dreams. Both cases set you up for failure by implanting delusional thoughts into your head. Here's my promise to you: I will never do that to you. Ever. 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱, 𝗜'𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 -What you're qualified to do -Whether your job requirements are feasible -Whether you're a good fit for my program -How long it will take to get what you want If we're a good fit for each other, you'll get actionable strategy, insights, and skills that will get you the end result that you actually need...a job in biotech that you're qualified to do. Most industry compbio jobs now are hybrid, anywhere from 1-4 days on site a week. But how often do/should you show up in the office? What is the happy medium for hybrid work for computational biologists? I find that pinning down an exact number of days to be on site is impossible (and often controversial). Instead, there are opportunities that I would prioritize being on site for: - Meetings for which I am presenting and for which many attendees will be on site. - Meetings with a bench scientist to discuss how best to analyze data they generated. So much of this gets lost in emails that it's better to just talk to the person directly in real time. - Lunch with my teammates. On certain days of the week most of them are on site. - The opportunity to have the entire office to myself for focused work. Q&A I did with a computational biology student a while back: 👉 Could you share what aspects of working as a computational biologist at Novartis, or the industry at large, you find the most fulfilling? 😎 I am challenged frequently to understand and apply new data analysis approaches, and the outcome of this work helps make drug development decisions that ultimately serve patients. 👉 In what ways would you say an industry role is different than an academic role for a computational biologist? 😎 The pace and objective. Pace is faster in industry because you are juggling more projects at once. Objective in industry is to impact drug development and clinical trial outcomes, whereas in academia the objective is to publish a nice story. Industry prioritizes usefulness; academia prioritizes novelty. 👉 Is there any aspect of your role that you find challenging or less enjoyable in the industry? 😎 One challenging aspect is that R&D innovation is usually several years upstream of when a drug is approved and generates revenue. That means it's harder for R&D scientists to make a case for more ambitious - and therefore more expensive and riskier - scientific initiatives. It's an awkward dynamic. 👉 For someone who is interested in transitioning from academia (recent master's graduate) to industry, what advice would you give or steps would you recommend to take? 😎 You should be reading job descriptions regularly to know what the job market wants. Then you can tailor your education so that you pick up those skills before you graduate.
