The new era of survey awaits! 🌊 🧭 In the offshore industry, keeping a competitive edge is no longer about maintaining the status quo—it’s about embracing the technology that’s shaping the future. Companies investing in autonomous systems are already ahead, but the leaders will be those who go further, integrating advanced situational awareness aides that detect and avoid obstacles missed by radar and not broadcasted by AIS. This includes everything from smaller, low-profile vessels to semi-submerged debris and marine mammals. Enhanced situational awareness means fewer incidents, smoother operations, and reduced downtime—qualities that set your fleet apart as a safer, more efficient choice. Don’t get left behind. Equip your vessels with Lookout+ to meet—and exceed—the demands of a modern offshore industry. #maritime #machinelearning #offshore #situationalawareness

🌍 Member States must establish monitoring systems in line with the #EUNatureRestorationRegulation to restore ecosystems and promote the recovery of biodiverse and resilient nature. Discover how we contribute to habitat monitoring through #NaturalCapitalAccounting and AI-enhanced techniques! For Eurostat, the statistical office of the EU, and in collaboration with the Joint Research Center (JRC), we developed the Integrated Natural Capital Accounting (#INCA) tool. This tool, optimized for the European continent, follows the SEEA EA standard and provides geospatial models for nine ecosystem service accounts and through its integration in QGIS eases the reporting for EU member states. Discover more about the development, use and future objectives of this brand new tool to support ecosystem accounting in Europe. 👉 https://lnkd.in/ecYsWrc9 Bruno Smets Lori Giagnacovo Alexandra Evans Mathilde De Vroey Jurgen Decloedt Bart Deronde Steven Krekels
Finally had an opportunity to glance through the European #NatureRestorationRegulation (#NatuurHerstelWet) that was recently voted. Chapter IV on Monitoring and Reporting drew my professional interest, where article 20.9 states that "Member State monitoring systems shall operate on the basis of electronic databases and #GIS, and shall maximize the #access and use of data and services from #RemoteSensing technologies, earth observation (Copernicus services), #insitu #sensors and devices, or #CitizenScience data, leveraging the opportunities offered by #ArtificialIntelligence, advanced #data analysis and #processing." This is of course right up our alley at VITO Remote Sensing and our #EnvironmentalIntelligence unit in general. Specifically, Bruno Smets' team developed the #INCA tool (https://lnkd.in/eKMB_PXi) for #ecosystem #accounting, and our #MAPEO platform should be ideally suited for drone-based, AI-enhanced habitat monitoring. For MAPEO, we have been recently working on supporting consumer drone data processing to facilitate citizen science, easy-access drone monitoring by individual conservation practitioners, and to enhance #FAIR data #collaboration between government and citizens. With the combined expertise of INBO (Research Institute for Nature and Forest - Instituut voor Natuur- en Bosonderzoek) , Agentschap voor Natuur en Bos, Natuurpunt, Scivil and many others, this should make for sound solutions. In my field specifically, I would like to call on conservation agencies and authorities to carefully consider future #geozone requirements for #drone flights in and around nature reserves and #Natura2000 areas. A blanket ban on #Open Category flights in these areas, like we sometimes see in neighboring countries, would preclude any valuable citizen science and consumer drone flight initiatives from the outset, so let's join forces to see how we can sustainably reconciliate leisure, science and nature while carefully protecting precious nature. Cameras and sensors can work together to improve #OceanData collection. In fact, pairing the two can enhance the effectiveness of data collection efforts for 🐟fisheries management and 🪸environmental monitoring. This enables more accurate, timely and evidence-based decisions to support #SustainableFishing practices and marine conservation. Underwater cameras like CatchCam provides visual evidence on fish and #MarineLife behaviour underwater. Sensors on the other hand, can measure various environmental parameters such as water temperature, salinity and turbidity. This integrated approach offers a multi-dimensional view of the underwater environment, facilitating informed decision-making in any setting. ➡️ What about that beautiful blue device in the picture below? I hear you ask. That is #SeaSensor, our newest advanced underwater sensor. Launching soon. Click here to check which metrics it records: https://hubs.ly/Q02DrYBz0
