Zhuang Zhou, Chinese Philosopher, once said, "Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly!" Our therapeutic art group is designed to boost residents’ moods by helping to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. Our Recreational Therapy department has planned several mural projects throughout the building. These murals allow our residents to express themselves through art, gain experience with murals, and participate in a hobby they love!

I’m particularly fascinated by the aesthetics of The Shield of Achilles, a theme that has been reimagined across various artworks from poems by W. H. Auden and paintings by Cy Twombly. In Greek mythology, it is originally featured in Homer’s epic poem, the Iliad, crafted by the god Hephaestus. The shield bears intricate scenes portraying diverse aspects of life, war, and civilization, offering a vivid representation of the human experience. 1. The Earth and Sky: Depicting the cosmic realms, symbolizing the vastness of the universe. 2. Two Cities: One at peace and the other besieged, illustrating the contrast between harmony and conflict. 3. A Wedding Feast: Celebrating a joyous occasion, representing the human experience of love and unity. 4. A Plowed Field: Symbolizing agriculture and the cyclical nature of life, reflecting the importance of sustenance. 5. A King’s Estate: Showcasing a thriving community, highlighting aspects of governance and societal structure. 6. A Battlefield: Illustrating the brutality of war, portraying soldiers in action and the chaos of conflict. 7. The Ocean: Depicting the vastness of the sea, emphasizing the breadth of the natural world. 8. The Underworld: Featuring scenes from Hades, representing the realm of the afterlife and the cycle of life and death. In Kenneth Atchity’s ‘Homer’s Iliad: The Shield of Memory,’ he elaborates on how the shield’s image broadens the poem’s perspective, universalizing its visionary scope. What strikes me as particularly inspiring is the shield’s role as a microcosm of civilization, capturing the richness and complexity of human existence in its diverse depictions.

Anxiety can be so confining and restrictive at times. Despite our best efforts to keep it all together inside, anxiety has a way of spilling outwards into our lives. This is where Art therapy shines! 🌞 In Art therapy you get the opportunity to safely release some of that held in anxiety. Letting it out, to be held or contained in your art. Once it is out onto the page, you can use it, or transform it as you wish. You could store it away until you feel ready to look at it. Or you could destroy it and rebuild it. Symbolically transforming anxiety into something different, something better. The art made during art therapy can hold imperfect things, messes or snippets of thoughts. It can help to explore and expand our view of ourselves. So remember, you don't have to hold it all by yourself. The four edges of a page could hold some of it for you. Thanks so much for reading my musings on the power of Art therapy for anxiety. Anyone else feel they could talk endlessly about their field of interest and still not exhaust the topic? What a privilege! 🙂 #Arttherapist #Arttherapyforanxiety #Privatepracticearttherapist #artascontainment #artpsychotherapy #arttherapyisthebest

Blindness can take many forms. Physically, it is the affliction of being born sightless or losing sight later in life. Figuratively, one might think of Milton’s darkness visible, which the poet uses to describe the hell which awaits Lucifer when he falls from grace. Blindness can also be a self-inflicted punishment, as in Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex who puts out his own eyes to atone for an unspeakable sin. Saramago’s epic novel opens at traffic light, where the first victim of a mysterious pandemic suddenly loses the ability to see. Chaos quickly ensues and then proceeds to engulf the city, bringing society to the very edge of cataclysm, only to lift again suddenly and inexplicably. More broadly, blindness could refer to the human condition: to the ability to see but not comprehend. Think of a newly arrived immigrant unable to read or speak the language of her new home, trying desperately to navigate and adapt to a different culture. An artist might feel paralyzed by losing his sense of wonder. Unable to break free from his own visual language and habitual practice, how can he seek out new avenues of expression or fresh lines of sight? On a personal level, I might add that a photographer knows no greater fear than blindness. And for that very reason, it is a subject worthy of artistic exploration.
