"Imagine you apply for jobs but never hear back. Imagine you search for a home for your family but are never successful. Imagine you experience harassment or violence that leaves you deeply traumatised." This quote is taken from the 2023 European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights "Being Black in the EU: Experiences of People of African Descent." The report highlighted many challenges that persist for our community living in the diaspora. The findings in the report are alarming as many echo the survey results from our 2020 Sangano Black Business Hub report, suggesting that little has changed in the last four years, despite more visibility. This year's Sangano Hub Bi-Annual Entrepreneurship Survey is an important tool for understanding the nuances of the challenges that people of African Descent face and how what resources and support are needed to address these issues. Your voice is essential in shaping institutions, supporting organisations and the entrepreneurial ecosystem Black entrepreneurship. The survey is open until March 31st: https://lnkd.in/eMEGEpXC Report: https://lnkd.in/d5HC3523

The ANZA Entrepreneurship Ecosystem program stands as a transformative force for Black youth, serving as a catalyst for empowerment and social change. With 72 Black youth participants enrolled, ANZA has become instrumental in shaping their futures. Happy to see my friend and colleague Robert M. Johnson featured in Urban League of Greater Kansas City newsletter #equalizers Way to go! #black #latinx #entrepreneurship #business #kcmo University of Missouri-Kansas City UMKC School of Humanities and Social Sciences UMKC Henry W. Bloch School of Management https://lnkd.in/get5MVQg Business Consultant Makes Entrepreneurship a Reality for Blacks, Latinos By all accounts, Robert “Bobby” Johnson should be relaxing and enjoying the fruits of his success as a longtime business consultant. Instead, he has put his own dreams on hold to help grow other Black and Latino businesses. Bobby holds bachelor's degrees in finance and accounting, respectively. He also has a master’s degree in economics and is pursuing a doctorate in economics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City where he also teaches. Bobby began consulting in 2010 in New York City. After moving to Kansas City, he was introduced to the Urban League of Greater Kansas City by his mentor, Dr. Linwood Tauheed. He and Dr. Tauheed co-wrote “RideKC – ZeroFare Executive Summary Quality-of-Life Survey” in the 2021 State of Black Kansas City, Charting the Path Forward: Is Equity Enough? Today, Bobby has maintained his relationship with ULKC, supervising the partnership between UMKC’s Bloch School of Management and ULKC’s Make Black Businesses Better (MBBB) program. In June, he also began teaching Kauffman’s FastTrac course to aspiring entrepreneurs at the Urban League offices. “As a Black and Latino man who studies economics, I understand what inequality means to people of color financially. Across the board, we are penalized by our race, whether that’s being passed over for bigger contracts, securing funds or receiving less pay for the same jobs. Add in gender, sexuality, religion … the intersectionality of all these things makes the penalties that much greater,” Bobby said. One way to help rectify this inequity is by forming a strong network with other business owners. “Oftentimes, the barriers are informational, not financial. As a community, we need to open the gates and let others in, not gatekeeping,” he said. “Meaning, if we need to hire someone to paint a building, hire a Black or Latino business and if they make a mistake, don’t bash them, it will only hinder their growth. Instead, teach them. A network like MBBB offers opportunities to grow and receive feedback,” he said. “It's never been about me trying to secure my pockets or have business owner’s dependent on me forever. I strive to teach them, so they won’t need me in the future,” Bobby added. “The beauty of entrepreneurship is that you get to define the goals of your business. There isn’t a cookie cutter approach because, in the end, we’re all striving to obtain a more equitable chunk.”

I firmly believe in the strength of community, care, and collaboration to achieve greatness. Despite knowing others who share this belief, I questioned why establishing, sustaining, and utilizing connections can be challenging. In spring 2023, I interviewed 12 Black entrepreneurs to explore how race socialization influences trust, networks, and the mobilization of social capital. Check out what they had to say. 😎 https://lnkd.in/eKnmTCeh

Soulaima Gourani writes in Forbes that there are psychological and social factors influencing whether Black and other minority people start a business. This is based on research conducted by finance Professor David Robinson of Duke University's Fuqua School of Business co-authored with Victor Bennett from the University of Utah. While we tend to focus on the structural reasons behind a lack of representation. Beyond access to capital, mentorship and education initiatives matter, too. In the US only 5% of the Black population owns a business compared to over 9% of the white population. To quote from the article: "For leaders and policymakers, this research highlights the need to look beyond financial support and address the underlying social and psychological hurdles that minority entrepreneurs face. By fostering an environment that encourages mentorship and community support, we can pave the way for a more inclusive and diverse entrepreneurial ecosystem." If you're a VC or policy maker who wishes to make the ecosystem more inclusive, remember that education initiatives can work alongside funding opportunities to create lasting change. #diversityintech #femalefounders #blackfounders #startups

Meet 25 Leading Black British Business People To Follow By Tommy Williams - Former Contributor I write about diverse people making change Many businesses including Netflix and Nike have committed to donating significant funds to increase equality after acknowledging they could do more. It is not clear to those outside of the black community how some of these biases can manifest themselves in the workplace and one way you can educate yourself is to follow outspoken business people who are doing great work to level the playing field. #StartupToScaleUp #BusinessGrowth #Entrepreneurship #Changemakers #LearningFromTheBest #entrepreneurship #BusinessOwners #diverseentrepreneurs #diversityandinclusion #Entrepreneurs #disabled #business #NYAE2024 #neurodiversity #businessprogram #Dyslexia #Dyspraxia #Dyscalculia #ADHD
