Today, Historic England have published their HEAN (Historic England Advice Note) 18: 'Adapting Historic Buildings for Energy and Carbon Efficiency'. In my opinion (as an owner of historic buildings, as well as someone working in the heritage sector), this is a very welcome publication, with useful examples of how traditional methods can offer practical and pragmatic solutions to the challenges of reducing our carbon footprint. One of the challenges but also tremendous opportunities in affordable housing development and design is utilizing truly unique sites. I've been a fan of Lorcan O'Herlihy Architects [LOHA]'s work for a while. Their use of land in LA and southern California is really great. Check out this article about utilizing an out of place 19,000 square-foot triangular median. https://lnkd.in/gKzi2BE6

This anachronism is part of the tradition of Roman-Greek aesthetic architecture, characterised by a fetishistic rhetoric of the symbolism of power since the 18th century. The freedom and independence of institutions are encapsulated in external walls with small fenestrations, as if they wanted to distance themselves from the outside world and the noise of the streets where citizens wander with their joys and sorrows, with closed walls as if they were diseased membranes of cells whose nucleus has been affected by the lack of oxygen. This are recommendations that would “advance the policy that Federal public buildings […] be visually identifiable as civic buildings and respect regional, traditional, and classical architectural heritage in order to uplift and beautify public spaces and ennoble the United States and our system of self-government.”
