2024 marks the 20th anniversary since Kofi Annan, former secretary of the United Nations, first coined the term ESG in his ‘Who Cares Wins’ speech.
The term “ESG” was initially introduced to the finance sector to encourage us to integrate environmental, social, and governance issues, building upon the Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) area. Despite recent criticisms of the name, these concepts remain crucial for people and the environment in the future.
Roger Lewis, Downing’s Head of Sustainability and Responsible Investing, remarked:
“The principles behind ESG are here to stay. They are becoming increasingly important as their links to investment and stakeholder returns become clearer. These principles are vital for engaged investors, effective boards, shareholder protections, natural capital gains, decarbonisation opportunities, informed voting, and outcomes for future generations.
Here’s to many more years of these guiding principles, even if the term ‘ESG’ evolves into something else.”
