Where in the world are VFX Compositors, Roto/Paint Artists and Matchmove/Tracking Artists? As you’ll see in the slideshow, India has by far the highest headcount when it comes to 2D-centric disciplines and matchmove/tracking, with almost 2x the number of Compositors compared to the next entry (Canada), 10x the number of matchmove and tracking artists, and more than 30x the number of Roto/Paint artists. As with 3D disciplines, the United Kingdom consistently ranks third in terms of overall headcount. This is the third post in a series. Gerry Li is doing quite an amazing artistic work, combining Gaussian Splatting, NeRFs, photogrammetry and Unreal Engine. Creative oportunities given by the nature of Radiance Fields and Point clouds have been known for a while, and during the whole XR era we've seen works based on point cloulds. However, it looks so great now with RF/GS/NeRFs, so I'm quite optimistic about the wide spread of those in the VFX industry #gaussiansplatting #nerfs #radiancefields #UnrealEngine #VFX

Chroma 0075 - In Which Alex Acklin fixes Cinema - Part 3 A few years ago, I had an idea for my former compositing program, I would get students to fix cinema's small overlooked mistakes. Some mistakes filmmakers ignored on purpose; others slipped by. These shots often lacked VFX, thought to go unnoticed. Alex shares his experience on fixing one such mistake. "In this field, getting feedback is essential. As compositors, we scrutinize pixels so closely that it's easy for details to slip through the cracks. I constantly seek constructive criticism from my instructors on my projects. A particularly memorable instance was my work on a 'Hurt Locker' challenge shot. Given it's a practice shot from an actual film, there's considerable compression, making it difficult to track how the bullet casing was moving. I managed to produce a basic version in Maya, but my instructors pointed out slight discrepancies in motion and motion blur upon review. They introduced me to various techniques for generating motion blur and manually adjusting the bullets within Nuke. The minor adjustments culminated in a well-executed bullet shot with accurate motion blur." Alex's story shows the importance of feedback. It's easy to miss small details in compositing. Fresh perspectives are crucial. They not only improve our work but encourage ongoing learning and improvement. This is key in the dynamic field of VFX. This is why I always recommend anyone interested in VFX to go to school for proper VFX education. Good schools have instructors who can identify your mistakes and offer timely advice. Great ones can elevate your work. If you're humble enough to heed their advice, well, the results will speak for themselves.
