Sapphire’s involvement brought a focused approach to optimising the balcony design, specifically regarding sizing and fixing key principles such as anchor spacing and balcony dimensions. By aligning the design closely with the London Plan’s sizing requirements and leveraging cost-effective material sizes, Sapphire facilitated a more streamlined and efficient construction process. When retrofitting, the floor-to-ceiling height is likely the most critical consideration. The configuration of the existing structure will dictate the design strategy. Understanding how to analyse existing buildings is one of the most important skills for any professional in the construction industry. Do you know the minimal floor-to-ceiling height appropriate for buildings and which normative documents mandate it? What is the most energy-efficient ceiling height for residential buildings? The London Plan suggest ceiling height of 2.5m. However, it is not the most energy efficient option. Do you know what building regulations say about the ceiling height?
