In various statements, President-elect Trump has threatened to levy tariffs on imports from trade partners. Mexico, Canada and China were initially signalled out while the latest salvo has been directed at BRICS countries. While in the past, alleged “unfair” trade practices were cited as reasons for threatened tariff action, more recent pronouncements have referred to issues such as migration and drug trafficking, and, in the case of BRICS countries, perceptions that they may seek to de-dollarise their economies.
