Is it just me?! “All the fun, no school run!” ??? Fostering is not just for the weekend, with a few pennies to get them an ice cream. Actual foster carers been contacting me in their droves since last night, furious, concerned and feeling devalued and patronised. Could it get much worse? I don't blame those making this film it is simply borne out of lack of knowledge and ignorance as to the critical role of the foster carer and what is, and what SHOULD be involved. This is respite care (without the pay and adequate education). Our children are vulnerable, high needs and traumatised, this is not what they need. Also the government have already invested millions on the back of the Care Review in The Fostering Network's Mockingbird scheme, a proper well researched model to deliver more respite in an appropriate and effective way. The narrative here is simply terrible and so horribly ill-informed and thought out, again because it's being pushed by those who's knowledge is not underpinned by experience. Phrases like 'got a spare room then you could be a great weekender' 'you'll get an allowance to cover exciting things like going for an ice cream' further demote and diminish the nuanced skilled and trauma informed role of the foster carer. Also what about the foster carers who are doing the school run, are helping facilitate contact, are doing the homework and all the important things? Trying to suggest these 'weekenders' will be the 'popular' ones with ice cream and no school is quite unbelievable. Then the carer interviewed in the John Lewis part said you have to work if you're a foster carer and JL giving him 5 extra paid days made it possible. This is terrible mis-information and damaging to the narrative of foster care. 64% of foster carers are full time, what's more having fostered for 15yrs I can tell you it's more likely (with 2 children) you will have 50+ or so meetings a year, not 5, that is not the norm. This post does not touch the sides, I can not begin to list the issues with this. We need full time dedicated trauma informed foster carers if we are ever to have a hope of reversing the dire outcomes our care leavers experience, we need to focus on the carers we have (they are the best recruiters) and we need systemic change across the system. And I can hear some saying 'oh but it's raising awareness' or 'we need to start somewhere' or 'any foster carers are good' or 'It'll encourage people to foster more' Well I will say in advance it won't do any of those things. 📺 Last night we had our very own Laurie Kilby and fostering applicant Poonum on The One Show with the amazing Neil Morrissey launching our programme of Weekend Foster Carers across London. Now Foster wants to reduce the barriers to entry into fostering, so that more of us are involved and have a stake in supporting children and young people in care through strong and meaningful relationships. The Weekenders programme is such a great opportunity to get started in fostering. You get matched with a child or young person, to support them long-term to achieve their goals, try new things and have fun. One of our colleagues likes referring to this as ‘all the fun, no school run!’. Watch below to find out more and get in touch if you want to explore how you can foster in 2024 and beyond 📺 You can also find all you need to get started on our website: www.nowfoster.org #fostering #fostercare #london

You have way more experience and knowledge than me. I can only imagine what it must be like from my perspective in the system as a child (now very outdated) and the conversations I have had with some wonderful foster parents. I totally agree that we need to elevate and recognise the skill of this group of people and build a platform where it is an option as a professional caring career choice. How awesome would it be to sit along the other caring professions out there. I would say in terms of some of the conversations it’s not the right time to advertise the challenges. There are many professions with challenging aspects to them but often recruitment campaigns focus on the positives. To be transparent I can’t watch the show as I don’t have a tv licence, so commenting based on the wider discussion. 😍

I cringed at the whole piece, Sarah. Fatima Whitbread came across as predominantly ignorant and unconvinced by her own words and as for the part time foster carers, "I do it for the fun"!!! "Fun"??? By dint of being a bloody looked after child, these children are TRAUMATISED. Wheres the T-I training for them? Yet no one thought to mention this fact. And the "allowance"? Fostering is not about making a quick buck while you take in traumatised children for a couple of days. It is a serious commitment with many challenges.

Absolutely, fostering is more than just the fun, it's a serious, full-time commitment. And trauma is challenging for foster carers it’s a side that’s not fun, but rather sad and demanding because of the complexities of providing care to vulnerable children facing such difficulties. It’s time to acknowledge the emotional weight children carry and ensure proper support. Campaigning needs a balance, and honesty is key, people must know the real reality, being adequately trained and supported is whats needed or they just will leave, then another child will be moved around the system! The frustration from foster carers is valid, and it's time to call this out once and for all #respectfostercarers

I want to comment here Sarah, but I'm actually struggling to find the words. It's just one insult after another. They hate us. I think we need to call in the services of a top pyschotherpist and unpack what is really going on here with our great and good. Is it deep rooted emotional stuff causing their pathological resentment of foster carers. It's weird.

An Ex Headteacher, I did lead systemic change to improve educational settings, quickly. Oh, I foster, ride motorbike's and get tattoos too. With fun and a smile.

No its not just you Sarah. There's a real ignorance in this area. As it seems that only The Fostering Network have anybody with any power listening to them maybe our concerns need to be aimed at them too so they can take a message back to Government too.?

Really unhelpful but unsurprising- it’s challenging to get the real technical complexity of the direct work in Childrens social care reported on in the media - it needs more time to unpack than sound bite reporting allows

Terrifying. The potential of years/months/weeks/days of trauma informed practice potentially being undone in minutes with this form of ‘respite’ is gargantuan. And who will be left to pick up the pieces? Again

Fumbling PR nonsense which is further damaging and undermining the Fostercare recruitment and retention crisis role..A media wag the dog distraction .This is an example of damaging social impact projects under the guise of support .The army of affluent middle class individuals are not coming to save the day .They don’t exist .I agree the reality is not popular or news worthy.Do you know any barristers ,architects, medical professionals, who want to participate in a community PR marketing stunt. It will be a fun interesting topic to discuss at your next dinner party or 4 week vacation.

Appalling. It's all about the adults with no consideration for the impact on the children. The children need the stability and consistency of caring. loving, nurturing relationships, not playing a half-baked chess game that risks further relational distress. Glorified mentors being forced into the world of traumatised children for some fun at the weekend.

I’ve posted separately - but you are definitely not alone in your thoughts on this. I hope Now Foster (who I understand separately have some pretty good fostering recruitment strategies?)will engage with a discussion. My better half reacted exactly the same way when she saw it. Hugely disappointing.
