My office window was shot at (likely a pellet gun) in March 2023. The person who did this did not know me personally (they were never caught) yet they felt justified in trying to intimidate me & my office staff. There are many stories in media about forms of aggressive opposition to political figures, yet violent events continue to occur. When opinions are shared in written form that aim to discredit or diminish a public figure, it allows for a de-humanizing of sorts. Words matter. They matter in social circles, in media stories, in schools, at universities, at workplaces and in each home. When people move from disagreeing with policy to vilifying individuals, and that message gets AMPLIFIED, then those who have no self control act out on unhinged thoughts. We all have a role to play in scaling back the rhetoric. Although no one was in my office at the time that it was targeted, the impact of the action was unnerving. And the ripple effects it had on the people closest to me was intense. Let’s all do better to dial back and create a healthier dialogue.🌹

You may find yourself navigating tricky topics around the holiday table this week. When discussing gun violence prevention, it’s essential to start with the shared goal of keeping children safe. This common ground resonates with most people, regardless of political beliefs. Here’s a simple formula to guide positive, productive dialogue: 1. Acknowledge: Show that you’ve heard the other person’s concerns. 2. Pivot: Gently steer the conversation toward your key message. Avoid unproductive debates. 3. Answer: Share your message in a way that reflects your goals. Stay clear and focused. 4. Reacknowledge. End on a note of respect and mutual understanding. “I appreciate this conversation, and I’m glad we could share perspectives.” Breaking the ice can be the hardest part. Discussions often come with differences of opinion, misunderstandings, or emotional tension. But they’re also essential for connection, creating change, and finding common ground. Together, we can create a culture change for safer schools, homes, and communities.

Two weeks ago, I found myself evaluating the strategic communications surrounding a challenging situation. While my daughter was playing field hockey in Philadelphia, gunfire erupted during a live broadcast. Thankfully, everyone was safe with only minor injuries, but the uncertainty lingered. I flew out immediately to be with her, recognizing the value & need for comfort and a hug as she navigates her new life at a US College without fellow UK students. The impact of such events varies based on proximity and perspective. It's crucial to acknowledge the diverse experiences of those involved, whether on the field or in the stands, or watching via a live feed. While gun violence is less common in the UK, does its prevalence elsewhere justify no response simply because no-one was hurt? Also how do you support those involved, having grown up with a stiff upper lip mentality, I question if this approach truly serves us well in such situations. The subsequent statement, though delayed, emphasized the importance of not normalizing unacceptable circumstances. Timely responses matter, yet allowing space for processing is equally vital. Let's promote a culture where we refuse to accept the unacceptable and it should not take a tragedy for change or acknowlegement to occur, regardless of its frequency or how much it has been "normalised". #Communication #GunViolence #SafetyFirst

𝐒𝐀𝐅𝐄𝐓𝐘 𝐀𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐒: In the flash of a firecracker, your life and the lives of those around you can be forever changed. If you don’t believe me, ask our Public Information Officer Micah Bray, who, at the age of nine, suffered a traumatic eye injury caused by a runaway bottle rocket in the backyard of his Tonganoxie home. Micah recently shared his story with Dana and Parks on KMBZ Radio, hoping to prevent similar accidents from happening. Micah talked about the realities of how a single bottle rocket, lit on July 5, 1987, under extremely safe conditions, took his vision in one eye and altered his life and his family’s lives forever. Micah has often said, “It can happen; trust me. Be safe and remember the one who suffers the physical injury might be the lucky one; the ones who witness the accident and feel responsible for allowing it to happen often suffer the most trauma.” You can click here to listen: https://lnkd.in/gBDzFJp7 Please, let’s all have fun while staying as safe as possible this Independence Day holiday. Wear eye protection and gloves when needed. Don’t mix booze with fireworks. Maintain safe distances for spectators, and if you’re setting off fireworks, do so in clear, open areas. And please abide by your local laws. #fireworks #FireworksSafety #july4th #IndependenceDay

When we started the Media Advisory Board for Sandy Hook Promise nearly eight years ago, we believed we could inspire change. What we didn’t anticipate was the incredible participation and contributions from so many leaders across Advertising, Marketing, and Media. This time of year is especially difficult for the co-founders of Sandy Hook Promise. As we honor the 12th remembrance of the Sandy Hook tragedy, we’re reminded of the urgency of our mission. In 2024 alone, there have been 76 acts of gun violence on school grounds. At the same time, we take heart in the lives saved—multiple planned mass school shootings were prevented, and over 300,000 warning signs have been reported, thanks to SHP’s efforts. This progress is a testament to the tireless work of the Sandy Hook Promise team and, in part, the invaluable contributions of the Media Advisory Board. Awareness is the essential first step toward cultural change. Give to the Cause. Every American, no matter your political side, should be outraged by the political divisiveness taking place from both parties. I will be point blank: THIS CRAP NEEDS TO STOP AND STOP NOW!!! The politicians are destroying this great nation in an effort to hold or regain POWER and they will use every disgusting tactic to do so. It’s not about SERVING us, it’s about POWER and CONTROL! https://lnkd.in/gVjxMtT7
