There are lots of things that can help us when we are feeling stressed - movement, deep breaths, visualisation, meditation, journaling, mindfulness and many more. When I teach wellness workshops, I go over these options and then attendees walk away with lots of things to add to their “holistic toolkit”. When feeling overwhelmed or anxious, we can then draw on our toolkit to support us. I always suggest that people use their favourite one. Although, if yoga happens to be your best stress buster and you’re sitting at your desk or travelling on public transit, you can’t really break into a downward dog. Conscious breathing is always there as something that we can do at any part of our day. No one will know and only a few deep breaths will start to balance your nervous system and bring you into a state of feeling calm and balanced. Deep breaths are also like fuel for your body and brain. If you’re feeling tired, this will recharge your internal batteries. Try it right now! The photo below was taken shortly after I first got to London over 10 years ago. I used conscious breathing many times while navigating my way around a new life and new city. One of my favourite moments was when I felt overwhelmed on the tube and I suddenly realised I was deep breathing without telling myself to. Conscious breathing had become unconscious and it was incredible to see that I naturally knew what I needed!
