Are you one of the 60% people who would prefer online therapy to face to face? Chances are you’ve opted for this because you like the convenience. The transition to online working (estimates are that 90% therapists now offer at least some online sessions) has meant you can easily access a therapist no matter where you live. Better still, you can also choose the kind of therapy or therapist you go to. Prefer to work with a therapist specialising in treating eating disorders or sleep disturbance? No problem. Want to work with one from a particular spiritual background? Now it’s possible. Maybe the allure is the reduction in travel time so you can fit a session seamlessly into your working day? These benefits clearly matter as online therapy has a lower drop-out rate than face to face therapy. But could opting for convenience cause you to skimp on some of the commitment? Treat it like its less of a priority? Travelling to therapy forces you to set time aside to reflect on what you’d like to get out of a session and travelling home gives you space to consider what changes you want to make and how you might do this. Of course, you don’t need to travel to do this but making space for reflection outside of therapy can deepen the impact of the 50 minutes you spend with your therapist. Sitting in a therapy room also gives you more protection. If you’re in a high-powered job, can you ensure you’re not going to be called upon to approve a transaction during the middle of a session? Can you have a painful conversation without your colleagues watching you through a window? Is your 2 year old child going to wonder why Mummy seems so sad? None of these challenges is insurmountable, but teletherapy might need a little more thinking through than your average zoom meeting. I’ve spent some time highlighting how you can get the most out of on-line therapy and ensure you reap the benefits. It's been two months since I started operating a therapy space adjacent to my home. As a private practice therapist, I face numerous challenges daily, transitioning from a daughter to a therapist being one of them. To tackle this, I've experimented with a few things to help me smoothly switch roles. Firstly, I communicate my schedule to my family members beforehand to avoid getting caught up in household responsibilities during therapy sessions. Secondly, I enter my office 15 minutes before the scheduled session to give myself some breathing space. Thirdly, I take a few minutes to ground myself in the environment and practice mindful breathing before starting the session. Lastly, I go through my clients' previous notes and prepare a brief outline for the current session. These steps have helped me activate the therapist in me, allowing me to be curious and ready for the day's journey. #privatepracticetherapist #mentalhealth #selfcare #therapytips #clinicalpsychologust #therapy

Today we're going to tackle some of the most common (and maybe some uncommon) thoughts when it comes to therapy. One of the first things to contemplate: When do I see a therapist? This can seem the most dauting at times but in reality, it can be the easiest one. The answer is - whenever you feel the need and/or want too. Whether people have suggested it, or you feel like it might be a good time, there is no better time than the present. Almost all therapists offer a free 15-minute consultation. This provides both parties time to assess not only the situation but each other. When going to a therapist you need to make sure it's the right fit. Think of it like a pair of shoes: You want something that will be dependable, durable and able to last. We've all bought the pair of shoes where we went with the look over comfort (and sometimes at a steeper price). At the end of the day, we're hobbling on our feet, wishing for a heating pad and throwing the shoes out or far away, in the back of the closet. This is not the situation you want for your therapist. Just because their profile reads well, and they've worked for someone you know; doesn't mean that they may work for you. A good therapist will acknowledge their style of therapy may not work well for you and recommend you to someone else (and a good therapist won't be offended if you acknowledge this as well - usually both sides pick up on this). I always recommend people to make 3 appointments with different therapists. If for no other reason than this: there's usually a wait to be seen and this way, if the first one works out you can cancel the other two and if the first one doesn't work out, you're already on the wait list for the next. #mentalhealth #therapy

I was researching various EAP providers for a number of clients last year and one of the first questions I asked was ‘what support do you have in place for your clinicians?’ Every single provider I spoke with said to me 1 - no one ever asked them that question and 2 - they weren’t sure and would get back to me 😂 How can we expect therapists/psychologists/social workers or anyone working in professions where they’re priority is to care for others do their job well…when they themselves are not cared for, resourced and appropriately remunerated by the organisations they work for? #workplacewellbeing #traumainformedcare #traumainformedorganisations #mentalhealth #socialwork #kindredconsulting

If you're seeking therapy, know this: The company your therapist works for can make a world of difference in your care. Once upon a time, therapists might have varied in style, approach, and experience, but you could still expect a certain standard of care across the board. That's not really the case anymore. Now, depending on the company, your therapist might be seeing 30+ people a week while earning just $30/hour. They could have little control over who they see, when they see them, and might not be getting the much-needed time off to rest and reflect. Imagine being deep into a therapy journey and suddenly losing all contact with your therapist because the company decides to lay them off without a word of warning. So here's my unfiltered advice: It's high time we recognize that the companies employing therapists play a GIGANTIC role in the level of care you receive. Those considering therapy, please do your homework. Investigate companies that truly value, respect, and compensate their therapists fairly. Why? Because a well-treated therapist translates into better care for YOU. #mentalhealth #therapy #consciousconsumer
