Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is considered a rare disease. Rare diseases are defined as less than 200,000 individuals in the United States. It is estimated that about 100,000 Americans have Fragile X syndrome. The Fragile X premutation is not rare; it is estimated that up to 1 in 151 individuals have the Fragile X premutation.
