Here in the United States, we still have many schools, districts and states caught in literacy limbo and struggling to shift to evidence-based practices in reading instruction. By engaging stakeholders and simultaneously pulling multiple levers at once, Virginia passed sweeping Science of Reading legislation in 2022. The tremendous efforts of UVA Professor Emily Solari and Virginia Delegate Carrie focused on pulling three levers at once: Teacher Prep and Professional Development, Curriculum and Instruction, and Assessment. How is the momentum for literacy reform in your state? Here in Maryland we have a new legislative mandate for all schools to follow a comprehensive literacy plan for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year, including alignment of higher education and teacher preparation programs! Graphic inspired by the @literacypodcast episode “How a Science of Reading Bill Became a Law…in Virginia,” recorded on September 23, 2022. #scienceofreading #literacy #legislation #embaracingchange #alignment #stakeholderengagement #curriculum #teachertraining #assessment #professionaldevelopment #universityofvirginia #scientificallybasedreadingresearch #foundationalskills #orallanguage #readingcomprehension #highereducation

Reading Recovery should be put to sleep.
Today, we share a publication from a group of Concerned Educators in Massachusetts urging state legislators to resist a one-size-fits-all approach to literacy instruction. “If not done well,” they say, “policy decisions related to reading curriculum and instruction could permanently damage the positive change you hope to effect—a child’s ability and desire to read.” Blog: https://lnkd.in/gJTsAuFA

Check out the latest findings from the RAND American Teacher Panel! The report delves into U.S. public school teachers' perceptions of students' difficulties with reading in grades 3–8, their knowledge about how students learn to read, experiences supporting these readers, and what they need to help students become proficient readers. Despite the growing body of research on older readers, few studies consider whether U.S. teachers can identify students who have difficulty reading instructional materials across content areas or whether teachers feel like they have the knowledge and resources to support those students. The findings highlight the importance of including upper elementary and middle school teachers in resource development and offer guidance to policymakers designing or implementing reading instruction reforms. The secondary training programs offered by Keys to Literacy help tackle many of these key issues. https://buff.ly/4erqGUb #scienceofreading #keystoliteracy #literacypd #literacyprofessionaldevelopment #literacyresource #literacyresources

We can pay our teachers much more. We have to stop misappropriating the truth about their inability to teach our children how to read. We have to stop forcing them to sit and watch commercialized literacy products. Scripted curriculum takes away the intellectual planning that goes into meaningful teaching and learning. If we want high performing teachers, we must have an even higher commitment to the teaching profession. https://lnkd.in/enWpzkup #securethechalk

A staggering 1.3 million children entering fourth grade every year are unable to read at a basic level—that's nearly 40% of all fourth graders across the country. Recent findings from the National Council on Teacher Quality suggest that many states don’t adequately train teachers to effectively teach students how to read, despite mandates for evidence-based reading instruction across the country. Feeling uneasy about transitioning to evidence-based literacy? Wondering what you should do next? We can help. https://hubs.la/Q02q8b4d0

Interesting article on the science of reading.
I was pleased to share perspectives on the literacy efforts in Wisconsin with Kayla Huynh. Her reporting uncovered a sobering detail: while the state now has the best curriculum list in the country, only 27 of the state’s 386 districts are known to be using the high-quality programs on that list. 😬 https://lnkd.in/e5WXJd8t
Wisconsin reading scores led to a new law. Now the real test begins.

The “science of reading” has made its way into many state legislatures as a priority in 2024. In fact, over the past decade, 37 states and the District of Columbia have passed laws or other policies related to evidence-based reading instruction. 📖 Education Week highlighted five state initiatives in particular to follow in the coming year, including New York, Massachusetts, Maryland, Indiana, and Iowa. This proposed legislation includes everything from teacher training, making high-quality reading materials more available, statewide alignments of all literacy instruction to the science of reading, and much more.
