Aging with Breast Cancer and how Occupational Therapy can Help To recognize breast cancer awareness month our blog post is exploring aging with breast cancer and how occupational therapy can help. Did you know the median age of a breast cancer diagnosis is 62, and nearly 20% of women diagnosed with breast cancer are over the age of 75? In fact, women 70+ have a 1/24 chance of developing breast cancer at some point in their lives. Older adults with breast cancer may experience a number of physical, emotional, and cognitive challenges during and after treatment. Changes in physical strength and endurance is a common side effect, drastically increasing one’s risk for falls. Similarly, many people experience changes in their cognitive functions such as delayed processing, feeling “fuzzy”, and decreased attention. These changes can lead to decreased independence with safety awareness and even everyday tasks like paying your bills or organizing your day. People may also experience a whole range of emotions from deep anxiety and depression to acceptance and gratitude. Many of these symptoms impact your ability to do the things you need to do and want to do in a day. My friend Kyle Fahey was one of the authors of this article demonstrating the benefits of rehab for people who have been impacted my COVID-19. I remember at the start of the pandemic I was trying to express to my soon to be graduating students that we would have work for years to come. How has COVID-19 impacted your practice?
I am honored to have been granted the opportunity to collaborate with an outstanding team, and I am so excited that after 4 years of work that this article was finally published today!

The Experience of OT Students During Fieldwork: What Fieldwork Educators (FWE) Should Know In our most recent blog post recent fieldwork student and current capstone student Anne Momgbet shares her experiences and her advice for fieldwork supervisors. Here are some key aspects of the OT student fieldwork experience that fieldwork educators should keep in mind: 1. Stress and Anxiety- Doing fieldwork for the first time can be incredibly stressful and anxiety-provoking for students. 2. Confidence and Self-Doubt- Along with stress, students often experience swings between confidence and self-doubt about their abilities. 3. The Learning Curve- There is a steep learning curve for students as they transition from the controlled classroom environment to the real-life clinical setting. 4. The Need for Feedback- Feedback from fieldwork educators is extremely valuable for OT students, as it helps shape their clinical skills and thinking. 5. Feeling Like an Outsider- Entering a new facility with established routines and relationships among staff can initially make students feel like outsiders. 6. Relationships and belongings- Between our educators, fellow staff members, and patients, new relationships emerge during fieldwork. By understanding the student mindset and experience during this pivotal learning phase, fieldwork educators can provide the empathy, support, encouragement, and direction needed to guide occupational therapy students into skilled, confident professionals. I really enjoyed this recent blog post by Kiley Hanish, OTD, PMH-C discussing the experiences of Autistic mothers. One important observation she makes is that many Autistic mothers are not aware of their diagnoses until their child is diagnosed. I'm wondering how we as an OT community can support these folks sooner in their parenthood journey. How do you think we can fill this gap? https://lnkd.in/gne2VpTJ
