Today, on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we reflect on the painful legacy of colonialism and the ongoing harm faced by Indigenous Peoples. This day is a call to not only remember the past but to actively work toward a more just and equitable future. Indigenous peoples and nations have lived on Turtle Island for 10, 000 years in harmony with the land they responsibly steward. Colonization disrupted their lives by seeking to eradicate Indigenous peoples, knowledge, cultures, languages, and ways of living and replace them with European ways, knowledge, language and beliefs. Because of this history, it’s crucial we listen to the survivors of residential schools and those lost, it’s crucial to listen, learn, and take meaningful steps towards reconciliation. This isn't a journey for a single day but a continuous commitment to understanding, empathy, and justice for all. How can we contribute? By holding ourselves accountable and pushing for change in our communities and workplaces. Let's foster environments where truth and healing are prioritized, and where Indigenous voices lead the way. Environmental justice is something that we should all be concerned about, particularly those with intersex experiences, those with disabilities, those from racialised backgrounds, women, and many others. These individuals are likely to experience the harshest effects of climate injustice. Our policies and work do not focus enough attention on those who are most likely to be affected. Addressing environmental justice requires intentional and inclusive policies that prioritise the needs and voices of these communities. This includes: 1. Equitable Policy Making:Ensuring that environmental policies are developed with the input and participation of marginalised communities. 2. Targeted Support:Providing resources and support specifically tailored to the unique needs of these groups to mitigate the impacts of environmental hazards. 3. Education and Awareness:Raising awareness about the intersection of environmental and social issues to foster a broader understanding and support for environmental justice initiatives. 4. Accountability Measures:Holding corporations and governments accountable for practices that disproportionately harm marginalised communities. As a disabled environmentalist, I have often felt like my identity and my advocacy clash, as a lot of popular climate solutions don't account for accessibility needs. BEST | Better Environmentally Sound Transportation is thrilled to contribute to this issue by highlighting the role of transportation for seniors, particularly those living with disabilities, during extreme weather.
