The King County Bar Bulletin’s Executive Director shared her article space with me this month. I have much gratitude for Christina Coad. I wrote a piece from lived experience, which included parts of my personal and professional journey. It ultimately highlights the necessity of 2SLGBTQIA+ competent and affirming (not just or only identifying) attorneys in all practice areas statewide, including in King County. The article includes some potentially surprising statistics about our state’s bar and some anecdotal experience from yours truly that can shed some light on barriers queer attorneys may face making it to licensure. #diversity #representationmatters #diversifythelegalprofession #lgbtq #transattorneys #dei #deib #probono #pathwaysintothelegalprofession #hirelgbtqia #trainlgbtqia #mentorlgbtqia #lgbtqiaplus #lgbtqia2s #legalrecruitment #lawschooladmissions #allyship #practiceequity #leadershipdevelopment #allies #inclusiveculture #intersectionality #underrepresented #servantleadership #livedexperience

Draft Law No. 9103, which was intended to introduce registered partnerships as an alternative to marriage in Ukraine, seemed to spark a wave of discussion and controversy. However, after an initial surge of interest, it gradually began to disappear from public discourse. Introduced in March 2023 by MP Inna Sovsun, the draft law went through a series of committee hearings and received mixed reviews. Some experts and NGOs welcomed it as an important step towards ensuring equal rights for all couples, regardless of their sexual orientation. Others expressed concerns about possible negative consequences for the traditional institution of marriage. The fate of the draft law is currently uncertain. It has not been put to a vote in the Verkhovna Rada, and it is not known whether this will happen in the near future. In this text, we will try to understand what is happening with this important document, what are the prospects for its adoption and what factors may affect its future. #humanrights #lgbtq #law #ukraine #partnership #marriage

Very interesting article and study. Hard to imagine that this imbalance has no effect on the development of law. Not a positive trend. Particularly notable: These highest-salience cases address the most controversial issues the Supreme Court has confronted: abortion (Dobbs and June Medical), LGBTQ rights (Bostock and Fulton), and the Second Amendment (Bruen). And in these hot-button cases, the liberal skew is indisputably overwhelming: 95% of the Big Law briefs supported the liberal position, and only 5% supported the conservative position. https://lnkd.in/eXiMSBay

Earlier this year, my Note was published in the Columbia Law Review. At graduation, I found out that it received the E.B. Convers Prize, which recognizes the best legal essay written by a member of the graduating class. If you are interested in LGBTQ+ rights, legal history, or contract law (or better yet, the combination of all three), check it out! https://lnkd.in/eiSG8BWg

Recently Bridget Garrood and Max Cohen (he/him) presented to all our colleagues The Family Law Company by Hartnell Chanot an insightful and impactful course dedicated to addressing the family law needs and overall well-being of trans and non-binary clients. The discussions and sessions were incredibly enlightening, covering a range of crucial topics from legal protections and rights to the unique challenges faced by trans and non-binary individuals in family law contexts. A few key takeaways: - **Understanding Unique Legal Challenges**: Highlighting the specific legal hurdles trans and non-binary clients may face and strategies to navigate them. - **Comprehensive Support Systems**: Emphasizing the importance of creating inclusive support systems that address both legal and emotional well-being. - **Advocacy and Awareness**: The need for continued advocacy to ensure equal rights and protections under the law. A big thank you to Bridget and Max. Together, we are making strides towards a more equitable and understanding legal landscape to help support trans and non binary clients to feel psychologically safe and supported. #FamilyLaw #TransRights #NonBinary #LGBTQIA #LegalSupport #Inclusion #WellBeing #ProfessionalDevelopment

Last week, NALP published its 2023 Report on Diversity in U.S. Law Firms. It's wild, because I sit in anecdotal data all day that is consistent with the findings, and still find a lot of it surprising (not in a good way). + Women are still only 27.76% of partners, and only 23.7% of equity partners. The non-equity tier is more diverse, but that is cold comfort. + Just under 5% of partners are women of color. + The percentage of summer associates of color FELL in 2023. + Lawyers with disabilities represent just under 2% of lawyers. + 2.57% of partners identify as LGBTQ+. + 6.15% of associates were Black. + San Francisco has the highest proportion of women associates. Incremental change isn't enough. We are watching paint dry over here.

Is this the end of free associations? Should the WI now also come to an end?
