SO WHY'S IT IN THERE? I was discussing a role recently with a client and I'd got the job spec in front of me. As I usually do, I looked to challenge some of the requirements specified in the job spec to drill down into the what the client was really seeking. This is a brief summary of our conversation. Job Spec: Must be educated to at least Bachelors degree level Reality: Relevant experience is more essential than a degree Question: SO WHY'S IT IN THERE? Job Spec: Relevant compliance qualifications are essential Reality: No they're not Question: SO WHY'S IT IN THERE? Job Spec: Previous managerial experience is essential Reality: It would actually be an ideal 1st managerial role Question: SO WHY'S IT IN THERE? Job Spec: Must have at least 5 years' Compliance experience Reality: 3+ years' Compliance experience will be enough Question: SO WHY'S IT IN THERE? The problem is that such job specs with their inaccurate requirement criteria actually serve to discourage people from applying. They sow seeds of doubt in candidates' minds which it can be really difficult to overcome. OK, so the Risk & Compliance job market has slowed, but that doesn't mean it's easy to recruit. Far from it in fact. If you're recruiting at anything up to Manager level, it can still be a real challenge. So why are you putting people off when you should be doing everything you can to encourage them to apply? And so the next time you look to recruit, go through the job spec and particularly the Requirements section. Are your Essentials really essential? Are they even Desirable? Dear Network & Beyond, I hope this post finds you well. I am writing to share my current job search journey in the Financial Services industry, specifically targeting COO / Operations Director roles, but also open to opportunities in Compliance and AML. Since being made redundant at the beginning of January, I have been actively seeking new opportunities and have sent out over 300 applications. Despite my extensive efforts, the response from recruiters and hiring managers has been disappointingly sparse. From the few interviews I've had, the feedback has been varied - from being "over experienced or qualified for the job" to "the company may be too small for my plans and foresight", and even "unable to demonstrate enough technical experience". These challenges have been frustrating, but they have not dampened my spirit. I remain upbeat and confident in my skills. I believe in my abilities as a manager and leader, and I know that I can bring a lot to the table for the right organisation. I am reaching out to my network today to share my journey and the frustrations of sending countless applications with little feedback. What makes a good Operational Risk Manager 🔍 I have been fortunate to assist many Operational Risk professionals find new roles with some fantastic clients over the last 12 months, from Analyst/Associate to Head of Operational Risk. 🚨 Did you know? Audit & Compliance is facing a TALENT CRUNCH! 🚨 With over 740,000 open positions worldwide, the need for audit and compliance professionals is skyrocketing. Yet, these roles are incredibly specialized, making it hard to find the right talent. Here are some insights- ❗ Slow Talent Pool Growth: The talent pool for audit and compliance is growing at a mere 0.4% annually, compared to the 0.8% growth seen in other in-demand skills. This slow growth exacerbates the scarcity issue. ❗Remote Work Opportunities: Only 13% of audit and compliance roles offer remote or hybrid work options, which is significantly lower than other fields. This limits flexibility for potential candidates, further tightening the talent pool. ❗Regional Challenges: -Singapore: Hiring complexity for internal control systems skills is 16 times higher than average. -Canada: Hiring complexity for ethical and legal compliance skills is 14 to 15 times higher than in other regions.
