As a three-time CoS (2 yrs 2nd Infantry Division - Korea, 2 yrs Eighth Army (Official) and as XO/assistant to US Army TRADOC CoS) this book struck me as an accurate assessment of the role. Though the scope of my experiences could not match the incredible magnitude of WH CoS, the processes, roles and functions were quite familiar. The CoS, in civilian or military context, helps frame decisions, preserves the leader’s time for things that matter, act as honest broker, integrate and lead a staff. The measure of a staff’s functionality, effectiveness and efficiency usually turns to how well the Chief is doing his or her job. Holistic Health and Fitness, or #H2F, embedded human performance teams will soon be fielded throughout the Total US Army. Embedded human performance teams have already been resourced for 111 Brigades across the active component, and beginning in both the Army National Guard and U.S. Army Reserve will begin in fiscal year 2026. While awaiting the human performance teams to get on the ground, you can begin implementing the tenets of #H2F now with resources found at: https://h2f.army.mil/

We have 653 generals/top brass today. At the peak of World War II, in April 1945, the U.S. Army had: • 4 five-star generals • 13 four-star generals It’s worth noting that this number of four-star generals was not surpassed until recent times. In 2020, the Army had more four-star generals on active duty than it did during World War II. Casualties Among Generals: Of the nearly 1,100 U.S. Army generals who served during World War II: • Approximately 40 died during or immediately following the war • At least 11 were killed in action or died of wounds from hostile actions • 2 were executed by the Japanese while POWs • 4 were killed in plane crashes • 1 was killed by friendly fire • 5 died of natural causes Today, we have too many brass who benefited from DEI or are pushing DEI vs readiness.
