Raising the American flag….. Is not nationalism. It’s our country’s flag in America. Is a representation of the United States. United together in the pride of their country. Is a respect for where we live. Is optional, but is regulated by many laws for specific areas and within the scope of other flags being represented. Raising the American flag used to be an admired concept. If you raise another flag in this country, why do you do it? If you disrespect the American flag, why do you do it? If you hate the symbol for which the American flag represents, why do you hate it? If you have an answer to any of these questions, why are you proud of your freedom to speak freely?

Flag Day 2024 What Flag Day Means to Me: Flag Day, celebrated on June 14th, is more than just a day to honor the American flag. For me, it symbolizes a blend of history, patriotism, and personal reflection. A Connection to History: Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States in 1777. For me, this day is a reminder of our nation's journey, the struggles, and triumphs that have shaped the country. It’s a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who fought for the freedoms and values the flag represents. Patriotism and Unity: The American flag is a symbol of unity and pride. On Flag Day, I feel a deep sense of connection to my fellow Americans. Despite our differences, the flag unites us under common ideals of liberty, justice, and democracy. It’s a day to celebrate what binds us together as a nation. Personal Reflection: Flag Day also prompts personal reflection. I think about the values the flag stands for and how they apply to my life. It encourages me to consider my role as a citizen and how I can contribute to the betterment of my community and country. It’s a moment to express gratitude for the opportunities and freedoms I enjoy. Honoring Service and Sacrifice: The day is also an opportunity to honor the service and sacrifice of the men and women in uniform who have defended our flag and country. Flags. Since encountering this one at an excellent performance this week flags have been on my mind alot. In part because of my response to being confronted by this prominent one (ambivalent). Flags invariably have a potent symbolism. But what exactly do they symbolise? And to whom? Perhaps pride in a sports team; part of our community or personal identity; a safe haven. Often a rallying point for a cause. They can be perceived in different ways. For many the rainbow 🌈 flag is benign. A symbol of hope, inclusion and solidarity. For others it provokes hostility, oppression and persecution. National flags have myriad meanings. They may represent power (whether current or historical); unity - perhaps after conflict; values or tenets of a political system. Allegiance to a national flag may be a joyful rite of passage to citizenship; or a coercive tool. Context is key. Understanding symbols and our response to them is a theme that comes up regularly in my coaching practice. What do flags mean to you? What are your cherished symbols?
