One area that homeowners are tempted to skip when building their custom luxury homes is hiring an experienced architect. The reality is, that architects without an entire portfolio of high-end builds risk getting even the basics wrong. So, even though hiring the cheaper architect might seem like a great idea at the time, you’ll find that the value you get from a more established firm will help offset these costs in the long run. We found the ideal architects! After an in-depth tender process and reviewing a range of incredible design concepts, we’re thrilled to announce that Savills Portugal has been selected as the architecture team for our project! Our new office will be located at Rua Alexandre Herculano 50, spanning two floors and 2032 sq m in total. It’s the perfect space to let our creativity run wild and foster collaboration. Selecting the right architects wasn’t easy — there were so many amazing ideas to choose from. Here’s what sealed the deal: 1️⃣ Alignment of Vision: We were looking for a team that understood our goals and could bring them to life through design. 2️⃣ Innovative Thinking: Savills brought fresh, creative ideas that truly stood out. 3️⃣ Collaborative Approach: We wanted a team that felt like partners, not just service providers— adaptable, communicative, and solutions-oriented. 4️⃣ Proven Expertise: Their portfolio showed they can deliver big ideas without breaking a sweat. 5️⃣ Budget Alignment: A great design shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg. Their solutions struck the perfect balance between ambition and reality — no magic wands required. 6️⃣ Passion for the Project: It’s always a plus when the team is as excited about your project as you are. You’ll be working with them for months (or even years!), so finding a team that’s enthusiastic and invested in your vision can make a world of difference. A huge thank-you to all the talented teams who participated. #Architecture #OfficeDesign #OfficeRenovation #WorkplaceDesign #OfficeSpace #Construction

Understanding architect fees is important for people planning residential projects, especially in prestigious places like Malibu and Maui. As you envision your dream home in these paradises, it’s important to understand not just how much you will be paying your architect, but how you will be paying them. Architects typically use one of the following pricing models, also known as fee structures. 👉 https://lttr.ai/AS6hQ

Recently, I came across a LinkedIn post by an architect, where he shared an experience many of us can relate to. He had to cut short his family time on a Sunday to work on drawings because a client couldn’t draw a line between personal and professional boundaries. It’s an unfortunate but all-too-common scenario in our industry. Let’s break this down. We design and build spaces—spaces that often represent our clients’ personal dreams and ambitions. For them, these projects are deeply personal, something they wake up thinking about every day, especially on weekends when they’re not working. Their focus and energy on Sundays, for instance, are dedicated entirely to these dreams. But for us, these same spaces are part of our professional world, where we dedicate our efforts to perfection—except on days like Sunday when we try to focus on our personal lives. Clients tend to reach out on Sundays, holidays, or during our time off because they fear that any delay or distraction might derail their dreams. It's our responsibility to explain, and for them to understand, that this is how we earn our livelihood. Our goal is to complete their projects with the utmost precision. However, we are also entitled to our time. Just like them, we have personal projects and lives that matter. No project has ever fallen apart because a drawing was issued a day late. Our work is often tedious, lengthy, and messy, but in the end, we create the most beautiful spaces. We all need to learn to trust the process—including every stakeholder involved in the journey.

Ever need to figure out just whether you need an architect or not? Hopefully the below video can help!
Director at Eaton Wood Architects. Creating spaces that spark joy - through aesthetics, functionality and sustainability! Residential and Commercial Projects
Do you really need an architect?? (I might be a little bit biased here.. 😁 ) Unfortunately, due to the wide and varied scope Architect’s services, it’s not always clear to people what exactly an Architect does and how Architects can help you in your home renovation. If you are approaching a home renovation or extension project and are not sure whether it is worthwhile employing an Architect or not, I hope this video helps to clarify the areas where an Architect can help you. What I’ve found when presenting my residential projects to my clients is that they often say, "I never would have thought of doing that." This highlights a major advantage of hiring an architect: we bring a fresh perspective to your project, drawing on our expertise and experience to craft a design that meets your needs, solves your problems and ensures compliance with all planning and building regulations. #eatonwoodarchitects #homerenovation #irisharchitecture

3 reasons why architects hesitate to specialise (and why it's worth it): 1️ — “I can’t afford to limit my practice” When you choose a niche, you deepen your expertise in ONE area — which attracts projects from the clients you really want to work with. Example: Show a developer your portfolio of mixed-use urban projects & BOOM, you’ve positioned yourself as the go-to architect for that type of work. You’ll find it easier to secure the kind of projects that align with your vision & values. 2 — “I’ll get bored designing the same type of buildings” If you approach niching strategically, each project will still offer its unique challenges. ▶ Niching simplifies the PROCESS — because of your expertise in that area — but the creative possibilities are almost limitless. Example: If you specialise in sustainable architecture, you’ll already have mastered the best practices, materials, and design principles — allowing you to focus more on innovation & creativity. So you spend less time on technicalities — and more on pushing design boundaries. 3 — “I don’t want to miss out on different types of projects” Architects often fear that by niching, they’ll lose the opportunity to work on a variety of building types. But in reality, when you specialise, you position yourself as an expert in that specific field, which attracts more, not fewer, opportunities within that niche. Example: Specialise in cultural institutions & when a museum, gallery, or performance space is being planned, you’re the architect who comes to mind first. Your deep knowledge of the unique challenges & opportunities in that space makes you the go-to choice. NOTE: You’re not legally bound to stay within your niche. As your reputation in your niche grows, your work will be so impressive that you’ll still get requests for other types of projects — and you can decide whether to take them on. In my 9+ years working with architects, I've found that those who niche often find themselves with a stronger portfolio & more aligned clients. ⭐ What do you think? What are your objections to niching?

❓A question for ALL practicing architects: how often are post-occupancy evaluations implemented in your projects? From my experiences, POE remains the exception, not the rule, and I suspect many practising architects are sick of hearing what they already know. 😴 The benefits are widely known, yet the practicalities of undertaking a POE are overlooked. The brass tacks are in need of attention. 🎺 📍 I outline six practical ideas to get the POE ball rolling in organisations (big and small) as another way to demonstrate the value of your work. 🎟️ The first step? Start small... small enough so the task is manageable and achievable with the limited resources that are at your disposal. Read the article from Architecture Australia for more insights from my post-occupancy evaluation of four new apartment buildings in Melbourne, Australia. 🇦🇺 Thanks to Georgia Birks and Nicci Dodanwela for their assistance bringing this piece to life!
