"For the first time, a global collection of sarcoma patient advocates agreed to develop a solution that spoke to the health environments in which almost 75% of the world population of sarcoma patients lives—an accolade we as patient advocates should trumpet to decision-makers and policymakers." In our latest blog, Lauren Pretorius, CEO of Campaigning for Cancer writes about the challenges faced by sarcoma patients in Africa, and how they are working with SPAGN to overcome them. Every minute and a half, a woman dies of #CervicalCancer – 350,000 a year. About 94% of those deaths occur in LMICs, largely due to a lack of access to timely detection and treatment options. Cervical cancer can be cured if diagnosed early and treated promptly, but until recently, many of the available tools were unaffordable or ill-suited for low-resource settings. “These are not science fiction." A new report via Unitaid's technology landscape series serves as a leading repository of tools, case studies and evidence. Alongside World Health Organization recommendations, it contextualizes technologies within the framework of what works in LMICs. 🔎 Read the report: https://lnkd.in/gh2GBwbd UNITAID's focuses on tools for screening, diagnosis, and treatment of precancerous lesions, alongside future technologies such as #AI-powered screening. #MaternalHealth #ArtificialIntelligence #GlobalGoals #MaternalMortality #UNGA79

Preventing Unnecessary Loss: The Power of Conversations in Healthcare | Dr. Eric Griggs - New Orleans City Hall📍 Regular communication with healthcare providers about any lingering pains or symptoms is crucial, especially when it comes to potential signs of prostate cancer or other types of cancer. While it can be intimidating, discussing these concerns openly with a doctor can lead to early detection and better treatment outcomes. Many cancers, including prostate cancer, are highly treatable, and early intervention can significantly improves outcomes. Proactive measures such as screenings and lifestyle adjustments can often prevent these cancers altogether. Therefore, it’s important not to let fear prevent seeking medical advice, as early detection and intervention can save lives. -with Kwame Terra, MPH and bEHR Health Systems, Inc. #HealthAwareness #CancerPrevention #EarlyDetection #ProstateCancer #MedicalAdvice #LingeringPains #HealthcareCommunication #Screenings #LifestyleAdjustments #PreventiveCare #TreatmentOutcomes #GetCheckedGetFitGetMOVING #CommunityMedicineEverywhere 🌎

"At nearly $1000 per person for some tests, the cost of currently marketed Multicancer Early Detection (MCED) tests could overwhelm health systems. Companies are already lobbying the U.S. Congress to cover MCED tests in Medicare. The possibility that such tests could be widely implemented in the absence of an RCT demonstrating reduced cancer-related mortality is concerning, given the hard-learned lesson that cancer screening must be implemented cautiously, with a solid foundation of evidence on benefits and harms." Not surprising that the rush to implement MCED is driven by commercial interests, which oppose RCTs to prove whether MCED tests reduce cancer-specific mortality. https://lnkd.in/emPufERd NEJM Group IARC - International Agency for Research on Cancer / World Health Organization

I am a great believer in the power of science and the impact it can have on improving healthcare. However, what I believe to be as, if not more important, is how scientific breakthroughs in healthcare are applied to different geographies and cultures so that it can have its maximum impact. Every year, over 604,000 women worldwide are diagnosed with cervical cancer and approximately 342,000 die from this largely preventable disease, caused by infection with Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Today is #HPVAwarenessDay, a crucial time to confront the issue of cervical cancer. The overwhelming majority – 9 out of 10 women – who die from cervical cancer live in low- and middle-income countries. Early detection is pivotal to the reduction of cervical cancer risk, but something we don’t talk about enough is the barriers to sample collections such as embarrassment, cultural influences and negative prior experiences. Self-collection gives control back to a woman without the need for an examination. I am so proud to be a small part of advancing access to more inclusive forms of healthcare. This case study by Roche and BBC StoryWorks is a prime example of when science and societal and cultural understanding come together to make a real impact. #HPV #HPVAwarenessDay #ValueofDiagnostics #HealthcareForAll

A series of recent articles in the Wall Street Journal (sorry—paywalled for some) highlight how critical aspects of Americans’ health are deteriorating. One, entitled “Cancer Is Striking More Young People, and Doctors Are Alarmed and Baffled” heralds: “Cancer is hitting more young people in the U.S. and around the globe, baffling doctors. Diagnosis rates in the U.S. rose in 2019 to 107.8 cases per 100,000 people under 50, up 12.8% from 95.6 in 2000, federal data show.” Worldwide, the uptick is even starker, with a BMJ Oncology review finding: “In 2019, the incidence number of early-onset cancer was 3.26 million, a 79.1% increase from 1990.” There are so many reasons why this could be the case, from forever chemicals, to vastly-increased exposure to all different types of radiations.

So-called ‘rare cancers’ aren't as uncommon as you might think. In Europe, they amount to about 24% of new cancer cases per year, according to a RARECAREnet study. As such, they represent a public health challenge that needs addressing. ➡️TimeToAccelerate.com #RareDiseaseDay #TimeToAccelerate #EUCancerManifesto #RareCancers #PublicHealth
