The Sargasso Sea Commission will be showcased at the 10th International Waters Conference (IWC) IW:LEARN next week in Punta del Este, Uruguay! This is a communications and knowledge sharing conference, designed to bring together Global Environment Facility-funded projects focused on international waters. The Sargasso Sea project has been identified as a best case from the past 30 years of the International Waters portfolio, and it will be celebrated with an interactive exhibition at the event. The project is a child project of the Common Oceans programme, and it will be part of an event on cross-sectoral collaboration for sustainable management of ocean ABNJ. Join us on the first day of the conference, Sept 23rd, from 4-5:30 pm in Rio C, for a panel discussion! A scientist tracking a pregnant porbeagle shark off the coast of Bermuda has recorded what could be the first evidence of predation of this endangered species, which may pup in the Sargasso Sea. “The data presented in this study is, to the best of our knowledge, the first evidence of predation on a porbeagle and provides novel insight into inter-species interactions for this large, globally vulnerable shark species,” the study said. The Sargasso Sea Commission was delighted to attend the IUCN High Seas Workshop on Area-based Management Tools in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction on Sept 3rd and 4th. This annual meeting has adapted from focusing on the draft BBNJ process, to now working with the adopted agreement, and focusing on capacity building for implementation of the agreement and, in general, supporting the stewardship of biodiversity on the high seas. It beings together experts in high seas work, including scientists, IGO reps, and legal and policy experts. Later in the week, the SARGADOM project also held its advisory board and steering committee meeting for the third year of the project. While in Gland, the SSC Secretariat was given the chance to present on the work programme of the Sargasso Sea Commission to IUCN staff at a brown bag lunch. #SargassoSea #IUCN #HighSeasTreaty #abmts

Everyone knows of the iconic surface ecosystem that the Sargasso Sea supports, including 10 endemic species of 'sargassum rafters' that spend their entire lives in the algae - but there is a vast midwater and deep sea ecosystem at work in the Sargasso Sea as well. To the point that there is a deep sea animal with its foraging strategy tied to Sargassum - as this paper shows! This is just one example of the enormous connectivity between the surface and the deep sea in the high seas ecosystem of the Sargasso Sea. The SSC is delighted to announce the publication of a new article in Frontiers in Marine Science, 'High seas in the cloud: the role of big data and artificial intelligence in support of high seas governance – The Sargasso Sea pilot.' This article was a team effort to produce, with equal first authors David Freestone, Kieran Bjergstrom, Kristina Gjerde, Patrick Halpin, Kevin Fleming, Andrew Hudson, Alex Rogers, Fae Sapsford, Vardis Maximilian Tsontos, Ph.D, Jorge Vazquez-Cuervo, and David Vousden. The article examines new technologies available for the advancement of the governance of the high seas, in the context of legal developments including the adoption of the BBNJ agreement.
