Last year was a record-shattering one for U.S. solar power. According to the latest Solar Market Insights report from the Solar Energy Industries Association and Wood Mackenzie, the country is set to close the year with nearly 33 gigawatts of solar capacity installed. Existing solar PV systems have the technical capabilities to provide various frequency-related grid services! That's according to a report by the International Energy Agency’s Photovoltaics Power Systems Programme (IEA-PVPS). According to the report, to ensure the stable operation of electrical power systems, solar needs to take on additional grid support tasks that were traditionally managed by conventional power plants: frequency-related grid services, such as reduction of active power generation in cases of over-frequency, and, when paired with energy storage, the automatic increase of their output in case of under-frequency. In other words, we can provide the grid services we need with the technology we have. 🇺🇸 🌞 The “Utility-Scale Solar, 2023 Edition” from Berkeley Lab contains very 💡 insightful information re. the US SOLAR market. 👇 some of the key takeaways : - 10.4 GWAC of new utility-scale PV capacity came online in 2022; - median installed project costs declined to $1.32/WAC (or $1.07/WDC) in 2022. - Plant-level capacity factors vary widely, from 9% to 35% (on an AC basis), - Utility-scale PV’s LCOE fell to $39/MWh in 2022, - Adding battery storage is one way to increase the value of solar. At the end of 2022, there were at least 947 GW of utility-scale solar power capacity within the interconnection queues across the nation, 456 GW of which include batteries. https://lnkd.in/egWpK29Z
