In todays travel SMART and LIGHT packaging Both are equally needed. On lightness of luggage, need not to mention every pound counts when you gotta pay for extra luggage. :-) ๐Ÿ˜€ Storing hard cam shell luggage bags at home (often smaller apartments) when not travelling it self becomes issue sometimes. Shape Memory retention, air cushioning , self inflation /deflation, high tear resistance could be some ideas filling gap between hard cam shell and soft luggage.
