There is a growing list of states that offer universal free school meals (UFSM), which means that all children receive healthy school meals at no cost to the family. What does the evidence say about the impact of UFSM on schools and students? A new systematic review that included 6 studies representing more than 11,000 schools was published today. A key finding was that providing UFSM was associated with increased lunch participation. This means that more students are accessing healthy school meals. Other highlights from individual studies were that UFSM was associated with a decrease in the prevalence of students with obesity and fewer student suspensions. Learn more by reading the study led by Maureen Spill, Rupal Trivedi, Rachel Condie Thoerig, Arin A Balalian, Julie Davis, Margaret Foster, and Amanda MacFarlane from the Texas A&M Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Evidence Center and co-authored by national colleagues including Marlene Schwartz, Craig Gundersen, Angela Odoms-Young and Elizabeth F. 🍽 A 'competitive Europe" does not start with an empty stomach! 🥪 🙄 More than 100,000 Europeans think that an EU-wide #minimum #standard of a proper school meal and food education for every child in every school would be a good thing with lots of impact. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen: could this be part of your promised sustainable food vision in your first 100 days?! After all, the ask is based on the #EU Child Guarantee (Council Resolution 2021) initiated by you. School children need healthy school meals to concentrate, grow well, and excell in life 👦 👧 The food #revolution starts in school and at home with #children learning (again) where the #food comes from and how to #cook it (curriculum) It's about social equity and about public health. And it is not about right or left, or green or liberal. It just makes a lot of sense and a growing number of countries, regions and cities do it already. #SmallPlatBigImpact 💪 Last month over 90 million #children and #students went back to #school. It is not good that many lack proper school #food, proper eating #space, and proper eating #time. Time to change that and turn >100,000 signatures in 1 concrete measure with incredible benefits! #SmallPlatBigImpact 💪 #Thanks for supporting and promoting the push for an EU-wide minimum standard of a healthy school meal for every child in every school. https://lnkd.in/ea--p2T3 Julie Delcroix Coudun Jan Kohlmüller Dario Nardella Mathis Porchez Claudia Paltrinieri Carmen Burbano de Lara Anastasia Lundqvist Paola Hernández Olivan Carlo Triarico Jennifer Chang ICLEI Europe ICLEI Tamara Bruning Suzy Sumner Eating City Fondazione Ecosistemi Alexandra Nikolakopoulou Madeleine Coste Marta Messa Patricia Eustachio Colombo, PhD Global Fund for Children Global Child Nutrition Foundation Heidi Kessler Arlene Mitchell ANA PATRICIA LOPEZ BLANCO Susan Myers Marie-Cécile Rouillon Krzysztof Stefan Iszkowski, PhD Cindy SCHOUMACHER Anna Rechenberger Marie Crosset Emily F.

Helping children thrive is about more than providing food—it's about offering education, support, and policy changes too. Policy changes like the LAW that was passed in the State of Illinois mandating all Schools have a Plant-Based Option for lunch for every student who opts in to get this. THE PROBLEM - Students and parents don’t know about it. School administrators don’t know about it. School Food Service providers don’t know about it and if they do, they don’t know how to implement it. That’s where PBNM comes in. We’re helping with implementation plans at no cost to the schools. We are shouting it from the rooftops and we’re fighting with schools to get this done. Can you help? Can you contact your school and ask if they are aware and that you want to opt in? When we focus on holistic solutions, including promoting whole food, plant-based diets, we can truly make a difference in child nutrition and health and when we change things in schools, we truly are Growing Healthy Children! By working together to add nutritious food options place where kids can get them, like in schools, we are addressing the root causes of childhood malnutrition and lack of education. It’s then that we pave the way for a healthier future for generations to come. Can you help? Let us know. I recently listened to The International Schools Podcast episode with Dr. Julia Olayanju, where she talked about food education in American schools. Dr. Olayanju's nonprofit, FoodNiche-ED, focuses on teaching kids why eating healthy foods is important instead of just telling them they should eat healthy. She talked about how food education can be used in the United States to mitigate childhood obesity and how a scientific approach to food education needs to be prioritized. One part of the podcast I found particularly interesting was when Dr. Olayanju talked about how social media can influence children's perception of food, emphasizing the importance of having scientists step in front of the camera to dispel misinformation. Moving forward, I would like to spend more time researching the influence of social media on children's food. In the podcast, they talked about how corporations can use social media to influence kids, but I would be interested to know how content creators can influence kids' eating habits. I found The International Schools Podcast episode with Dr. Julia Olayanju to be thought-provoking and am excited to learn more about food education in schools.

R Community Episode 80 Importance of Education and Food for Healthy Community - Weekly food hamper combined with school supplies Food and education are two fundamental pillars for building a healthy and thriving society. They are interconnected and vital to the well-being, growth, and development of individuals and communities. Here's why they are crucial: 1. Importance of Food for a Healthy Society Nutrition and Physical Health: Access to nutritious food is essential for physical well-being. Proper nutrition supports growth, strengthens the immune system, and prevents malnutrition and diseases. A healthy population is more productive and capable of contributing to society. Cognitive Development: Adequate nutrition, particularly in childhood, is critical for brain development. Malnourished children often face cognitive impairments, which affect learning and future potential. Economic Productivity: A well-nourished workforce is more efficient, less prone to illness, and can perform better in various sectors. This boosts overall economic growth. Social Stability: Hunger and food insecurity can lead to social unrest and instability. Ensuring food security promotes peace and reduces inequalities. 2. Importance of Education for a Healthy Society Knowledge and Empowerment: Education empowers individuals with knowledge, skills, and the ability to make informed decisions. Educated citizens can participate more effectively in the workforce, politics, and their communities. Economic Growth: Education improves job prospects, increases earning potential, and fosters innovation and entrepreneurship, driving economic development. Health Awareness: Educated individuals are more likely to adopt healthy lifestyles, seek medical care when needed, and understand the importance of hygiene and disease prevention. Social Development: Education fosters critical thinking, promotes social cohesion, reduces poverty, and combats social injustices. It also helps in reducing crime rates, as educated individuals are less likely to engage in criminal activities. 3. Interconnection of Food and Education Learning Capacity: Proper nutrition enhances learning capacity. Well-nourished students perform better academically, while hunger negatively impacts concentration and cognitive functions. School Attendance and Retention: Access to school meals or proper nutrition improves school attendance and retention rates, especially in disadvantaged communities. Long-term Benefits: . Conclusion A healthy society is one where both food security and access to quality education are guaranteed. These elements work hand in hand to improve not only individual lives but also the collective well-being of the community, fostering growth, equality, and long-term stability. https://lnkd.in/gCpG38Hg #backtoschool2024 #diversityequityinclusionbelonging #diversityandinclusionmatters #EquityChallenge #equity #yeg #albertacanada #alberta #inclusionmatters #inclusion #pride2024 #Pride
