🌍✨Today, May 20th, we celebrate International Clinical Trials Day, marking the anniversary of the first clinical trial by Scottish physician James Lind aboard the HMS Salisbury in 1747. Lind's pioneering work laid the foundation for modern clinical research.✨🌍
🍋 In the 18th century, scurvy was a deadly threat to sailors, caused by a lack of vitamin C. It devastated entire fleets and claimed more lives at sea than all other diseases, shipwrecks, or battles combined.
⚓ James Lind, a surgeon on the HMS Salisbury, was determined to find a cure. He selected 12 sailors with scurvy, divided them into pairs, and tested six treatments, including citrus fruits. The men who received citrus showed significant improvement within a week.
💡 Lind’s work illustrates the importance of experimentation in medical science, paving the way for today's controlled clinical trials.
🎆 💊 As we celebrate International Clinical Trials Day, we honor James Lind and all researchers dedicated to advancing medical science. Their work saves lives and improves the quality of life worldwide. 👨🏽⚕️ 👩🏽⚕️
At DocNexus we are proud to play a small role in helping connect scientists to usher in the next-generation of life-saving medicines and clinical research!
