Population has never been a good indicator for police staffing levels alone, it's just a place to start. Calls for service, numbers of serious crimes, and percentage of obligated time are crucial to the equation. The community must decide on the level of service it wants after public safety minimums are met including response times and officer safety. Then community programming, level of preventative patrol, and amount of presence the community wants. Not to mention mandated in-service training requirements by law now taking officers off the street have to be figured in. https://lnkd.in/eXs9Qny8 Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police

According to a recent study from PERF, for the first time since the start of the pandemic, agencies reported a year-over-year increase in total sworn staffing. Responding agencies reported hiring more sworn officers in 2023 than in any of the previous four years. All this is good news for police agencies nationally. On top of that, agencies are in a position to develop young people from within their communities. Riding the wave of momentum for change, let's leverage this crucial stage for impactful police reforms. Together, we can transform our collective energy into actionable steps towards a safer, more just society. #PoliceReform #Justice #ChangeMakers
Super proud of my former team for reaching an incredible milestone! 😃 Bill 17 was introduced this morning with initial policing reforms in British Columbia. These changes to the Police Act will improve the governance and oversight of policing while contributing to more systemic improvements to BC's policing and public safety landscape. But the work is not done yet! The policy team is working hard on other policy and legislative reforms, including police training, provincial governance and Indigenous policing models. Meanwhile, the engagement team continues to build relationships with Indigenous partners, local governments, policing representatives, police oversight agencies, and community-based and advocacy organizations to inform the policy and legislation work. Big shout out to the incredible Tung Nguyen, MA., Jordana Norgaard, PhD, Hadi Ahmadi, Nimmi Takkar, Stacey Malainey, Dennis Anthonipillai, and many others! Amazing work 👏🏼 This is only the first phase, with much more to come in the near future! This Police1 article by ASEBP board co-chair, Terry Cherry, discusses the challenges facing police departments in the United States, particularly in terms of staffing. It highlights the decline in the number of police officers and applicants, leading to public safety issues like longer response times and increased violent crime. The article also touches on the growing trend of affluent communities turning to private security, creating a divide in safety services available to different socio-economic groups. This scenario raises concerns about the future of public policing and the need for encouraging more people to join the law enforcement profession. #ASEBP #EBP #publicsafety #policing

Agree that a stop and search should be approached with dignity and respect. Weed out the officers who abuse their position - don't continue to police-bash our law enforcement. It is not clear to me why many people have an issue with stop and search conducted with dignity. Yes, I have. Outside Oakwood station some years ago. No issue with it. Issues arising might be late for work/appointment/catching a train/attending emergency hospital and such like. Some people may feel embarrassed. The problem is not stop and search. It's the way we demonise it in operation. "The police are not doing enough to curb crime/knife crime". Untie their hands. Look to weeding out the gung-ho idiots and let them - police. Education - make it known: Caught packing? Caution. Caught again? Automatic five year sentence. Education - make it known: Acting like a street rat - commit homicide? Life imprisonment. Human rights? What of the rights of the deceased and their loved ones? Of the possible generations of lives that person may have brought into this world? and who those people might have been, what they would have contributed to in our communities? It's always someone elses fault right? Wrong. Responsibility, accountability - culpability and resilience. Cause and effect.
Last month, our super-complaint joint investigation found that the police must do more to minimise harm when using stop and search powers and to understand the effectiveness of these powers. ⬇️ Read more: https://ow.ly/8ryS50QvtJN Criminal Justice Alliance | College of Policing | Independent Office for Police Conduct
